Synopsis

A Newsreel History of the Third Reich, Vol. 16
Despite the slightly misleading title, the Newsreel History of the Third Reich series of releases consists not of unbiased, objective documentary material on WWII events involving the Third Reich. Instead, the series presents compilations of propaganda footage shot by the Reich and originally used to mislead the German people into believing in the Reich's superiority and military victories. The footage in question was seized from Gestapo archives by the Russians and illustrates how Hitler "spun" the war to his people. Volume 16 in this series covers the last three months of 1943, with events including the formal education of the Hitler Youth, the Stuka blitz against Nevel, the bombing of the Volturno Sector on the Mediterranean front, the infamous tank battle at Krivog Rog, and much more. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A Newsreel History of the Third Reich, Vol. 17
In lieu of presenting a factual and unbiased portrait of Nazi Germany during World War II, the series A Newsreel History of the Third Reich actually consists of distorted propaganda footage, shot and edited by the Nazis in such a way that it was intended to give German citizens a more glowing picture of the Reich's progress and development in the Second World War. The footage was collected by the Russians in 1945 and now appears, edited together, in this unique series. Volume 17 covers events from early 1944, including Rommel's inspections of fortifications and troops on the coast of the English channel, the sequence of events on the Western front, and the preparations of the Berlin-based military against bombing raids. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A Newsreel History of the Third Reich, Vol. 20
Don't be misled by the title: the Newsreel History of the Third Reich series does not construct a factual history of the rise and fall of Hitler's Reich from newsreel footage screened for the Allies, but deliberately presents an assemblage of distorted and fallacious, propagandistic newsreel clips shot by the Nazis for German audiences during World War II. The preponderance of footage at hand was seized from the S.S. by the Russians, and it provides a window into how WWII-era Germans perceived the events of the war, and how Hitler's government "spun" those events to them. Volume 20 covers occurrences in the final year of the war, 1945 - including V2 rockets fired at London, Allied supply convoys attacked in the channel on the Western Front, tank and infantry battles in Hungary, and Josef Goebbels' pleas to the Germans to fight for Hitler to the bitter end. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A Newsreel History of the Third Reich, Vol. 19
Volume 19 covers September-December 1944, with such pivotal events as the training and marching of the Hitler Youth, General Irwin Rommel's funeral, Germany's bombardment of southern England with the notorious V-2 rocket missile, and the retreat from Riga on the Eastern Front. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A Newsreel History of the Third Reich, Vol. 18
Volume 18 covers the second half of 1944, with depictions of such seminal events as the famous assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler, Josef Goebbels's speech promising revenge for the bombing of Berlin, the ominous emergence of the V1 and V2 rockets, the defense of Cherbourg at the mouth of the River Orne and much more. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
