deft power pop ! fun ! Posted by: from: Las Vegas NY on Jeff Lynne wrote it all, played it all, every instrument, and it works, nice, low key ELO tinged power pop, soothing, good ringing driving music

Disappointed Posted by: from: on I'm a huge ELO and Jeff Lynn fan. I was excited to hear that Jeff was back in the studio and recording under the ELO name. However, after picking up this record, I was very disappointed. The sound is not much like the classic ELO, where are the strings? (E.L.Orchestra) Anyway, the writing is not bad, but technically, is not a well done record. Not to be "that guy" but there is a muffled sound to the entire recording, even the old analog recordings had more presence and high end. I also cannot get past the mediocre at best, drumming. I know Lynn played all the instruments, and that is talent, but I've heard much better drumming in a bar bad. Lame and predictable fills, poor sound, very basic rhythms, it's sad actually. Sack it up and hire some session players that can hit the skins . I know these sound picky and trite, but every time I listen to "Alone in the Universe" I just can't get past them. Poor production and bar band instrumentation is not what I expect from Jeff Lynn. Still an ELO and Jeff Lynn fan, but feel like I wasted my money on this one.

Worth the wait Posted by: from: on Obviously Jeff Lynne has aged right along with the rest of us but that didn't make the anticipation and enjoyment of this new release any less palpable for me . This album is mindful of both ELO albums of old and Jeff's solo stuff. And like most of previous works I'm sure I will become more attached to it the more I listen. Thanks Jeff! When's the tour?

Sounds amazingly like a 70s ELO record Posted by: from: on Remarkably, Alone In The Universe fully captures the sound of ELO's 70s classic records. Alone in the Universe is basically a Jeff Lynne solo record. Since he's a studio whiz and he was the primary vocalist and architect of ELO's sound, it's not surprising that Alone In The Universe has the classic ELO sound. What's more notable is that it's a good record, with carefully crafted songs, that could be a lost work from ELO's peak years. It has lots of ELO trademarks. When I Was A Boy continues Lynne's tradition of Beatles tributes. Alone In The Universe has just Lynne doing almost all the vocals and music but it has the band's distinctive depth of sound. A few of the songs are good re-creations rather than exciting songs but some, like the more rocking Ain't It A Drag and One Step At A Fun, are really fun and comparable in quality to ELO's best.
