Freedom and the right to protest are put on trial in A&E's American Justice: Riot -- Chicago Conspiracy. During the Democratic Convention of 1968, riots ensued that handicapped the entire city of Chicago. Police brutality and hostile crowds made for a violent combination. When it was all over, eight militant leaders were arrested for violation of the recently constructed Anti-Riot Act. The subsequent trial became a media sensation with uncontrolled outbursts and dramatic courtroom antics. Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panthers, was gagged for yelling at the judge and eventually severed from the group. The remaining men were known as the Chicago Seven and included Abbie Hoffman, Tom Hayden, Jerry Rubin, and David Dellinger. After an initial conviction, the case was overturned on appeal and the radicals walked free. But, the very American ideals of peaceful assembly and the right to combat the government were shaken to their core. A&E relives the trial that brought an end to the Hippie movement. ~ Sarah Ing, Rovi
