America's Castles: Cattle Barons - King Ranch, Trail End State Historic Site, Thistle Hill
Cattle barons have been building impressive homes for many years in states like Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming. This A&E program takes an in-depth look at several of these mansions, including the attractive home built on the expansive King Ranch near Kingsville, TX. In 1853, Captain Richard King founded this ranch that now covers 825,000 acres. Thistle Hill, built in the early 1900s in Fort Worth, TX, reflects the Georgian Revival style. It features 18 rooms and five fireplaces. W.T. Waggoner, a successful cattleman, built Thistle Hill for his daughter as a wedding present. John Kendrick built the beautifully landscaped Trail End in Wyoming in the late '20s. He first traveled to Wyoming from Texas while on a cattle drive. Trail End is now maintained as a historic site by the state. The Cherokee Ranch in Colorado that looks like an early Scottish castle is also featured. ~ Elizabeth Smith, Rovi
