America's Castles: Gardens and Galleries
A&E takes viewers to see three lovely mansions surrounded by gardens that have become scholarly libraries, museums, and tourist attractions. The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens are located on beautiful grounds in San Marino, CA. Though the Huntington was once the home of wealthy Henry E. Huntington, it now accommodates thousands of scholars and tourists each year who want to see its many treasures, which include a copy of the Gutenberg Bible and many other rare literary and artistic items. Throughout the year, nearly 15,000 types of plants grow in its breathtaking gardens. The program also visits the Philbrook Estate built by Waite Phillips in Oklahoma. This mansion is an attractive Beaux Arts Italianate villa that now houses its own impressive array of beautiful artworks. Finally, the show visits the handsome Reynolda House that now serves as a highly regarded museum. ~ Elizabeth Smith, Rovi
