Two Embraces Mexican director Enrique Begne's drama Two Embraces (AKA Dos Abrazos, 2007) follows four lonely and disenfranchised urbanites in contemporary Mexico City: a preteen boy under tremendous emotional strain, the pretty cashier with whom he is infatuated, an enraged and embittered cabbie, and the estranged daughter of one of his fares. Per the film's title, these characters pair off, finding unexpected hope and salvation in one another. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
Ladies' Night A gal gets a crash course in love as her wedding day draws near in this romantic comedy from Mexico. Alicia (Ana Claudia Talancon) is a pretty but eccentric young woman, who was powerfully effected by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland as a child, and who today makes her living as an artist, creating drawings that betray the influence of the classic fantasy tale. Alicia is engaged to marry Fabian (Fabian Corres), the publisher of a successful lifestyle magazine, but Alicia is rather naïve in the ways of love and is still a virgin. Alicia is also unaware that Fabian has been having an affair with Ana (Ana de la Reguera), an editor at the magazine who would love nothing more than to have Alicia out of the way and Fabian all to herself. Hoping to disrupt Alicia's bridal shower, Ana hires a hunky male stripper for the occasion, Rocco (Luis Roberto Guzmán), but while Alicia is embarrassed by his performance, she's also intrigued by him, and she finds herself striking up an unexpected friendship with Rocco that soon takes an unexpected turn. Ladies' Night was screened as part of the 2004 Los Angeles Latino Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
Tired of Kissing Frogs Deceived by her boyfriend and weary of jumping straight into another "serious" relationship, a young designer decides to play the field by registering at an online dating service in this romantic comedy from Mexico. Martha is a talented young designer with bad luck in love. After discovering that her boyfriend is cheating on her, she dumps the chump and joins an Internet dating service called "Tired of Kissing Frogs." After all, men aren't looked down upon for exploring their options, so why should a single girl like Martha deny herself the fun of going out on a few frivolous dates? Before long, Martha is partying into the small hours at some of Mexico City's hottest nightclubs. But when Martha meets the man of her dreams, she can't decide whether to sacrifice her freedom in the name of true love, or keep having fun and risk passing up the love of a lifetime. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
