I recently upgraded my speed through my local cable company. Immediately noticed I was not getting the speed or service I should have. I contacted the cable company and they assured me that everything to my modem was working correctly. I then knew I had to upgrade my current equipment. I had a Linksys DOCSIS 2.0 modem and a Linksys 54G router. I purchased a Motorola 6121 DOCSIS 3.0 modem and my speed increased but the router kept dropping. I guess it couldn't handle the increased data. I then purchased the new Apple Airport Express Base Station from Best Buy. Wow, I came home unhooked the old router installed the new AE and I was up and running in about 5 minutes. No drops, super fast speed and full bars even in my backyard. I could not be more pleased.
I am currently supporting; 2 desktop computers, 2 IPhones, 1 IPad, 2 Apple TV, many accessing the internet at the same time with no issues. Apple advertises up to 50 devices and I believe it. I will defiantly look to Apple for other products. If you are looking for performance along with easy setup, look further than the new Airport Express.

Adds value to existing entertainment systems
Posted by: LivestrongKC from: Kansas City MO on
I have several Airport Express' around my home for different purposes. Two of the newer ones, and one of the older ones. The newer design is better now that it's designed to sit on a surface. The previous design was meant to hang from a plug. Luckily for that one, I had an old iBook cable that connected to it and allowed my to put it flat on a surface.
The AirPort Express is easy to set up with Apple's AirPort Utility. Express allows you to use it as an extension of an existing network or create a new one. In my home, I use two for piping music from iPods, iPhones, any of my Macs, including a Mac Mini that I use as a music server, to separate sound systems in my home. One is an old boombox in my garage and the other is a old Klipsch iGroove that's not compatible with newer iPods and iPhones. This is great way to again find use for that dockable sound system that's no longer compatible with newer iPods and iPhones. My last Express is used to make my Dymo label printer wireless.
I've also used an Express when traveling to create my own wireless network in my hotel room. Some upscale hotels charge $10 per day for wireless access but almost always provide free wired Internet. In that case, I connect my AirPort Express to the wired network to create my own wireless network. Not only do I save $, but also have a more trusted wireless network that I, and anyone I'm with, can access. In some areas where I might not trust a provided wireless network, I've set up my own network in addition to the one provided.
I sincerely love this product and highly recommend it. It's flexibility is amazing.

Every Apple product I buy keeps getting better.

I just got rid of my old router, single band Netgear, that was either starting to go, or I never noticed just how bad it was till now.
I have a connection of 35 Mbps, and never did a speed test till last week. I was only getting 30 Mbps sitting next to the router, and less than 20 on the other end of the house, and less than 18 in the basement.
Now, with this router, I am getting no less than 34 Mbps everywhere in the house.
I can now go outside again and enjoy my iPad and laptop in the yard with full strength signal.
If you are familiar with the size of the Apple TV, then that is the size out this unit. Very small and beautiful.
And for people that want to have a secure network, but don’t know how to do it, Apple provides software to get the unit up. I had it plugged in, named, password protected in less than 5 minutes. I have worked with routers from pretty much all the companies, and BY FAR, this is the easiest to setup.
If you have never used an Apple product before, this is a sweet entry item to get. If you have used Apple stuff before, than you know how good this is. This item could be selling for $150 and it would still be worth EVERY penny.
If you are looking for a new router, I can not recommend this item enough.
It just works.

Easy to set up and great performance!

I purchased the new Airport Express after recently acquiring two new smart phones. My internet speed had always been good, however, these added devices had put a strain on my current set up. I had a very good Net-gear wireless N single band router connected to my 10 meg internet service. The router was less than a year old and did a good job with my laptop, XBOX360, and Apple TV. But when we added a tablet, and two smart phones to the mix, the system was having issues. I bought the new Apple Airport express because it is a new dual-band design which I read that will give the best connection to each type of device connected on the network. Set up was incredibly fast and intuitive, only taking about 15 minutes including the time it took to unhook the old setup. Using my network utility, I was only getting 144 mb/s with my old router, but once hooked up to my Airport Express, that number shot up to 300 mb/s! Web pages load nearly instantly, and all of my devices are faster! I have everything running wireless with the exception of my Apple TV which is wired directly to the Airport Express for maximum speeds to stream video. The lack of additional wired ports is the only downside to this fast, little white box. If you are wanting to have wired internet connections to multiple devices, you might want to get the Airport Extreme, but for only $99, you simple cannot beat this little guy!

just bought it, online 60 seconds later
Posted by: mitchfla from: boca raton on
Had 2 net gear(WNDR3700) dual band routers over the past year, both dropped connections at least once a week. Finally, bought a 3rd today. Setup on a mac was crazy. Literally online 60 seconds later. Once I plugged it in along with my modem a install window opened immediately, I named the network, put in a password, confirmed it, the next box confirmed all the network settings and I was online. I have an ethernet cable connected to my bedroom direct tv receiver so I can steam live tv broadcasts to my ipad while I am on my life-cycle doing cardio. My new router also is right next to my black and white brother laser jet printer that wasn't wireless until I plugged my new router into it. Now I can print from any device throughout my house instead of using my nice photo printer. How can so much come in such a small box ?

Not good unless your whole house is Apple
Posted by: EricTyler77 from: San Antonio, TX on
It worked great the first day, then it started to have conflicts with the modem from the cable company, devices would get kicked off the internet and then it would not reset. I had it for about 35 days then I took it back to the store and got my money back. You would need to have an airport extreme for it to work well.

My 3rd wireless router in 3 years. Set up was super fast with my iPhone. It has greatly improved connectivity with AirPlay. I've not had to reset it once. Improved wifi speed. Love it.

Simple Set-up- Use with Other Recent Apple Routers
Posted by: Sonsofvegas from: Gainesville, Florida on
Fantastic product. I use it as a wireless bridge for my smart TV (that doesn't have built in wifi) because I can't run Ethernet cable across the house from my modem.
Use with other newer apple routers, time capsule, airport extreme for best results when extending a network or when using as a bridge or for AirTunes/AirPrint

Couldn't get Wi-Fi signal at all in the back of my house, once I set up the Airport Express I had great Wi-Fi connectivity. Very easy to setup also.

Super Easy Installation
Posted by: sailnorth from: Port Huron, MI on
If you are looking for a super easy router to install this is it. I love the quality of Apple products. I had it up and going in about 20 minutes including unboxing. I have already had an update. I never knew how to update my previous router. It was just so easy. No more spotty coverage for me. Most of my 2500 sq foot house is covered and even get some wifi outside in some places.
