At the End of Daybreak An aimless lout crosses paths with a corrupt woman and pays the price in this drama from writer and director Ho Yuhang. Tuck Chai (Chui Tien-you) is a twenty-three year old whose life is stuck in neutral; he's not especially bright, he doesn't know what he wants to do with himself, and he works in a neighborhood shop run by his mother (Wai Ying Hong), who has a drinking problem and depends on her son for most of her needs. Tuck has been dating Ying (Ng Meng Hui), a self-centered and amoral girl from a wealthy family who is only fifteen. When Ying's mother (Mandy Chong) finds birth control in her room, she forces the girl to confess her relationship with Tuck, and angrily approaches him and his mother. Ying's mother demands that Tuck pay her a large sum of money or she'll turn him in to the police for statutory rape; Tuck grudgingly agrees, even though he doesn't have the cash and he knows Ying doesn't need it. Raising the hush money pushes Tuck and his mother to the verge of ruin, and insult is added to injury when after making the payment, Ying's mother goes against her promise and tells the police about his relationship with her daughter. Sam Mo (aka At The Edge Of Daybreak) received its North American premiere at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
