For the price, this lens is a steal. Amazing quality throughout the 70-200mm focal length. Having F/4.0 all the way is great too.
Yes, it does not have IS. But if you can keep your shutter speed up or use a monopod/tripod it won't matter.
Just beware, you won't look at any other lenses besides L's after getting this one. (Yes, it is a L gateway drug.)

Amazing Sport Lens
Posted by: RJ70 from: Pittsburgh Pa on
I originally bought this Lens for sports photography and was planning to mainly use this for Motocross and Supercross. I was a little worried about the f4, being you would have to have good lighting for the pictures to turn out right, but after I got this lens I was amazed how great the pictures came out..even in low light! As far as not having IS, you don't need it with sports and most of the photography you plan to shoot. I also took portrait photos, and they turned out amazing as well!! In other words, the Canon L series lens compared to the regular Canon lens just pops! The colors and everything look more realistic and vibrant. The body I use is a Canon t3i and this is a pefect matching lens for the zoom range 70-200. I must admit, I probably will NEVER buy another lens unless it's an L lens!

Great lens, Great price
Posted by: MichiganPhotographer from: St. Joseph, MI on
I've heard this lens referred to as a "chick" lens in the industry as it is substantially lighter than it's sister f/2.8 L series lens. I've not had the chance to use it in a very low light setting where the 2.8 lens or the f/4 lens with image stabilization might come in handy, but this a great lens and I've not been disappointed with it's performance so far. I'm not really sure that the IS feature is worth twice the money. And I love the fact that it's not nearly as heavy as its 2.8 sister. Would highly recommend.

All you would expect from an L
Posted by: Bart6 from: Monroe, LA on
I have only had this a lens a few weeks now, but I am just blown away by the clarity and color saturation of my photos. The build quality is very solid. Since the zoom mechanism is inside the lens, dust and moisture are less of a concern. The only gripes I have is how expensive the tripod mounting rings are and the fact that the lens does not come with one. It is a MUST-HAVE for this lens. I'm sure they exclude it just to make the price that much more attractive(and let's fact it, it is!), but COME ON, CANON!! The lens itself is truly a gem. I look forward to many years of excellent service from this lens.

Nice budget "L" lens
Posted by: jtazzb from: SouthEast USA on
This is a very nice lens if you want an entry into Canon "L" (Luxury) series. You get the great "L" glass and build for less price. This is great for long shots and it keeps it's nice clarity all through it's range. It has *outstanding* bokeh that leaves you with some beautiful shots, especially portraits and floral shots...can't say enough about the bokeh. Has a nice build quality and single barrel means the movement is inside and less places for dust to enter. Comes with the lens hood and soft case to keep it in when not mounted. The color and contrast is wonderful. The downsides that I found...the lens cap is VERY difficult, if not impossible to remove without first removing the hood. While it does come with the hood and soft case, it does not come with the tripod mounting collar which isn't very cheap when you have to buy it. It's light color stands out like a sore thumb and I would be careful if out wandering around the back allies at night to get some night shots. All in All...for the price this is a real bargain for a Canon "Luxury" lens! I love the great bokeh, just the right amount of color saturation and excellent contrast. It will be great for a lot of photography but it still won't be on my camera nearly as often as my shorter, lighter, wider "walk around" lens (Canon 28-135 IS lens).
For the price and the glass...well worth the price.

Great price for "L" Glass
Posted by: Photodude4444 from: South Pasadena, CA on
I bought this primarily as a portrait lens and to upgrade from my kit lens.
This lens is amazing in sharpness, color and contrast .
After using this lens it's difficult to go back to anything less than "L" glass.
Keep in mind this lens does NOT have Image stabilization.
To avoid camera shake at long focal lengths use a shutter speed of 1/250 or higher.

This lens is great , produces spot on pictures and the build quality is excellent. However, $600 - $700 for a lens that is virtually an outdoors lens is something to think about. There's significant issues with hand held photos in dim light with blurred and out of focus results. However, if this lens is something you plan on using in the previously described lighting then it is a BARGAIN.

Fast focus great quality
Posted by: Joshmodelskidoo from: on
Got this lens years ago paired with my old rebel. I really like it and shop for a canon L lens and see the price, this will be near the top of the list. I wanted a constant apature, fast focus, not plastic telephoto lens with with internal focus and the 70-200 is what i got. I would love to have one of the 2.8 is versions but thats like tripple the price. It is alot heavier than the plastic kit lenses but worth it. In fact I put a wide angle kit lens on and i hate it because every time i use a polorizer on it i have to always adjust it for every shot and wait for it to focus. The 70-200 is on my now 70d that i love 95% of the time.

I'm very impressed with this lens, you can really tell in the quality of your pictures, its very sharp in image quality and the depth of field is beautiful. I highly recommend this lens as it is a L series and once you use this lens you wont want to use a cheaper version lens. Its also great value for money as it is an L series lens which is the canon top quality glass.

Nice lens for the $$$
Posted by: HUgymnasticsdad from: Stockton Mn on
I purchased this lens for primarirly taking pictures of action sports both indoors and outdoors and have not been dissapointed. The speed of the lens is great at catching images that were always blurry before. I have only been able use it indoors so far without flash and has worked very well. I would bet that outdoors it will preform equally as well if not better
