For enthusiast and professionals. Posted by: from: Lakeland, Fl on I initially rented this lens and after just a couple of days decided to purchase it. The quality of the pictures are magazine like. I do not regret buying this lens at all. Great walking around/ wildlife lens. I just wish it was a little cheaper, but I have never gotten a picture with this quality out of my kit lens.

For Serious Enthusiast Posted by: from: F.C., Colorado on I really wanted to keep love this lens, but being a semi-pro going pro it just didn't cut the grade. Right now in my business I just couldn't justify something that was this long and not compatible with at least the Kenko teleconverters. It will work, but not reliably and I missed far too many image captures for this to be a keeper lens. On the plus side as strictly a 70-300 range L lens this is a nice lens and produces very acceptable images. I thought I wouldn't mind the telescoping lens, but it' not for me. AF is fast and IS is superb. I hand held many captures of antelope, buffalo and moose with this lens and later on down the road when I have the extra change I might go for this lens, but to be realistic I can carry my 70-200 f/4 IS with the Kenko Proplus DGX 1.4x converter and get 280mm and identical image quality with a much more versatile package. Kudos to Best Buy for their trial period and the great way they handle returns. I'm opting for a Canon prime L, so that I can use an extender for the reach. GREAT lens for the Enthusiast, but still a bit heavy and not as versatile as the 70-200 f/4 IS with a high quality extender. IF you want to keep it simple and need weather seal and updated IS and AF then this is a go to lens with excellent optics.

So this is what a white Canon lens feels like... Posted by: from: on "Oh wow, that IS heavy!" I think those were my first words when I held this hunk of metal at my Best Buy. Seems like nowadays everything is made out of plastic, even things that really would be better off in a metal casing, like cell phones! (hint hint) Feeling good in weight it got me intrigued, I had had the $200~ Canon 75-300mm before and was not too impressed. The pictures that lens produced were good enough for someone who had had a Rebel T3 but at this point I'm looking more towards the future and I had my chance to give this thing a chance, and if I were being rational, I'd say no, I don't need this, but what do we need? All philosophy aside, this is obviously an expensive piece of glass, but the pictures it's producing for even myself, a serious, yet amateur photographer, are stunning. I'm amazed at what a little bit of research and tinkering can net me now! I bought this along with the Canon 7D Mark II and I couldn't be happier about that overall purchase. This was a very exciting evening for me, opening up the boxes for these items and this lens has not been put aside much at all! Even though the F stop on this is 4-5.6, it really is more than good enough! It compliments my Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 very well! While I really wanted the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 L II IS USM, I simply couldn't afford that nor necessarily justify such an increase in price, especially considering the shorter focal range. While I understand the benefits of the bigger constant F stop, I really want to do more things that I feel will benefit more from the farther reach this lens will provide. Like I said, the pictures this lens produces are great, it feels very well built, and not to mention, it's actually quite SMALL when it is fully retracted! It's less than half an inch longer than my Sigma in this state, which is impressive! Red rings are nice.

Expensive Posted by: from: on Well I purchased and I returned The image quality is great. I bought it even though i knew it doesn't have tripod ring or a nice canon case. It is a fast lens but I returned for the 400mm L

Great lens, but practice first Posted by: from: on This is a great lens but it takes some practice because it's much more capable than the basic version with the same zoom. It's also a bit on the heavy side. I use it primarily for outdoor shooting, including soccer games. Very happy with the results once I got used to it.
