Canon EOS 5DS R DSLR Camera

I've had it for a week, and it is everything that I was expecting. Instead of using Macbeth Color charts or other measurement tools, I just took it into the field and shot landscapes and scenics (what I do). It is incredibly sharp and detailed. I photographed some flowers without a macro lens and cropped them. Beautifully detailed images. I have the 5DSR, and I do not see any moire patterns. I tested some low light pictures, and I did see some noise in the shadows like other Canon cameras. However, I HDR'd the same images and created stunning files. Shooting at f22, I experienced the same type of diffraction as with any camera. So, the optimum apertures are still in the f8 to f11 areas. I only shoot raw, so I cannot say how it handles jpegs. I processed my images in Lightroom CC. Because of the image sizes, I noticed a very slight slow down in processing but nothing inconvenient. I used both Photomatix and Lightroom CC to process HDR. The processing time was slower but not intolerable. Overall, I have the same thrill of when I went from 35mm to 2 1/4 back in the film days. This is a bigger jump. I have a 5D Mark II. I would say this camera is equivalent to going from a 2 1/4 to a 4X5. You have the flexibility of shooting handheld. I am excited that Canon made this move...

Outstanding - with a caveat...

Unlike the 5DM3 or other Canon full-frame DSLRs, this camera requires a bit more time setting up your shot and taking some care to avoid camera shake. Primarily that means shooting at higher shutter speeds and using a tripod to ensure stability when shooting. When you know what you are doing, however, the image quality that can be captured is impressive and resembles medium format output.

This camera grabs great detail from landscapes. The huge number of pixels may slow your computer somewhat when you process the images, but the camera itself operates beautifully. The camera feels like the 5D mark II. Controls are similar but not the same. The autofocus offers 64 points of focus. It doesn't have the iso range of some cameras, but in the range of this camera it gets good images with minimal noise.

What I was wondering when the 5DSR was introduced was whether or not there is a noticeable improvement in sharpness and contrast when its images are downrezzed to smaller sizes versus the 6D. So far, I would have to say yes to that though I may have a more nuanced opinion many months from now. I've not been one to do many large prints, but this resolution monster may change that. At the risk of sounding like a unrepentant fanboy of a particular camera manufacturer, nonetheless here it is anyway: outstanding work, Canon!

Great camera for serious photographers

The Canon EOS 5DS R is definitely not for beginners, and offers the highest resolution of any DSLR on the market today. To get full use and enjoyment, you'll need a tripod and Canon's best lenses, and spend some time getting to know this system. Once you feel comfortable with it, you will be amazed at the clarity and depth of field you can get. Definitely not for everyone, but if you shoot portraits and landscapes, this may be the last camera you'll ever need.

Great camera! New features & 50+ megapixels- wow!

Bought the camera for an upcoming trip to Alaska. I bought this camera to replace my 5DM3. The two cameras are very similar with the new camera going to the next level in image size and clarity. The Quick Control button is great, making it faster and easier to change camera settings. The Scene Intelligent Auto setting is interesting and looks to create a simple shot taking program that handles all functions except pushing the shutter-release button. I will update this review after my Alaska trip.

A better 5D
Posted by: BestOmar from: on
I love the image quality, it's what all full sensor cameras should have. It seems a bit slow to do continuous shots but with the right memory it seems ok.
My only gripe is with me, not having the latest software & hardware to process new canon raw format.

Awesome resolution, great color

This camera is a huge upgrade from the 5D III, not just in the number of pixels, but in the features and image quality. At ISO 100 it is the ultimate landscape and nature camera. I have used it for bald eagles in flight and landscapes in the Rockies and it is stellar for both. At 4.5 frames per second it won't replace my 1DX for birds in flight, but as a second camera with a short lens on, it will replace my 7D II. The pixel density is the same, and I am less likely to cut off wings with full frame vs 1.6X crop.
Love this camera...it is a keeper
