Cheap, Functional, but not "Great"
Posted by: Billyjoeray from: on
This is a pretty standard printer, although I am not really impressed with any of the features. They are all mostly "there" but they just kind of suck in comparison to printers I have used in the past.
I had need of a small all-in-one printer and while this one doesn't take up a lot of desk space, it is somewhat inconvenient to use.
The main pro of this printer is the rock bottom price and the small desktop footprint.
The print quality seems to be pretty decent too.
There are some cons that made me wish that I had spent some more on a nicer printer though:
In order to scan, you have to use the proprietary software, otherwise it doesn't seem to be able to "find" your computer on the network. This software is obnoxious and the default setting is to start with your computer, which can slow down your startup. While you can disable that, you will have to start the software before you can scan anything, which is annoying.
It does not do automatic 2-sided printing, either. You have to manually reinsert the print job in the correct orientation to print on the opposite side, which is very old-school and inconvenient.
Also, the interface on the printer, while functional, is really clunky and unpleasant to use.
I kind of regret being so cheap and buying this printer instead of a higher quality one. I don't think I would recommend this printer even if you only use it very rarely. It will make every time you DO use it extremely unpleasant.

Great Quality, Value for Money

For a Moderate User of a Printer, Such as printing shopping lists, coupons, invitations, photos, documents etc, This is a Fantastic Printer! Its price is hard to beat, and the support centers are in the USA incase you ever have any trouble. I would certainly recommend this printer if intact you would use it for any of these purposes.

Pros- printer easy to set up. Love how quick it prints and the quality of it. Prints and connected to wireless and wired devices painlessly. Phone, laptop, etc.
Cons-fax set up takes a bit of patience. After the set up it's easy. It's not that quiet, not the loudest either but there might be a quiet setting.
Setting up to fax last minute made me to want to throw it. Tip don't set it up right before you need to send a fax now. Take the time to go thru all of the install and there's some helpful videos online to guide you thru it. Get the software package from the website. The CDs didn't do me much good other than drivers or getting stuck due to mine being a 64 bit OS.
I really do love this one tho, despite the fax hair pulling. It's much better than their older version of this.

Great small footprint printer

Great small footprint printer that's not as easy to use as the next version up. However, it does everything the larger one does. Connection to Wi-Fi a little tedious.

After spending over two hours of configuration wifi still wasn't connecting so I follow the canon online setup directions and trouble shooting and still no connection. Next day I decided to return the printer but instead did a router reset and started a new setup
With the new windows 10 I figure maybe there wasn't an update yet but for someone who doesn't know and is having problems with the wifi, try resetting the router and do a fresh setup then try installing drivers again.
I did this with three computers at home and all are working fine.

Perfect Choice for the Occassional Printer
Posted by: thenewlyweds from: on
My husband and I only print occasionally, so we didn't feel the need to spend a lot of money on our printer. It's easy to use and compatible with iPhone and Android, which makes wireless printing a breeze because we don't have to move documents. It prints pictures pretty well, but I wouldn't recommend this model for professional photography. However it is perfect for scrapbooking and when we want to frame something. The only downside is it does not print both sides. You'd have to print odd pages and then flip them all and print even pages to use both sides of the paper. I personally think this printer is a great deal for a college student or people who just need something basic at home.

Great So Far!

Great value for the money. I needed a printer with a fax machine, and one month later it has yet to disappoint. I'm still using the sample ink cartridge and have printed a couple dozen pages. I have yet to experience a paper jam or any such issues. Fax was a breeze to use.
Loses one star due to lack of coherent instructions, but once I figured it out, setup was a breeze with a WPS connection. If you don't have WPS, and are using a Mac, installation may be difficult depending on your iOS. I had to upgrade my iOS due to a malfunction in an older iOS.
Also, the on-screen display is a bit cheap, difficult to read, and lacks any serious features, but I don't really care about that.
All in all, it does its job well and is worth the money if you just need a cheap way to print.

Great wireless printer

Reason it was not given five stars is due to the ink cartridge running low quickly.

Very difficult to setup for wifi scan
Posted by: Robert from: on
I bought this printer when my epson wf2540 broke. The mx942 is very difficult to setup and has misleading info on the box. The box says it has scan to cloud options, it doesn't. It will scan to a computer via usb or on the same wifi network. If that computer has the canon scan software installed, and it's firewall is configured correctly. If that computer is setup to sync folders to the cloud then you can set up scanner software to scan to those folders and then the computer will send to the cloud. This is fine for me because I have an always on computer in my house for automated stuff. The wf2540 would scan directly to several cloud services without a computer, so this is what I was expecting for the canon.
The menus are not very clear for setup, and the screen is difficult to read sometimes.
The speed and quality are decent. In the end it works well enough now that I've got it setup that I'm not going to bother returning it. But I could see it being very difficult if not impossible for some people to setup the wireless scanning stuff. Wireless printing worked right away on all my macs.

I'm not able to make copies from the top feeder. I have to scan each paper one at a time on the plate. Ugg. I thought I was getting a great product because of the brand name....
