High Dynamic Range TV Technology

HDR MAKES 4K ULTRA STUNNING

By enhancing the contrast and color representation of the existing pixels on your TV, High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology creates a more natural viewing environment where colors practically glow, and shadows and highlights form exquisite detail that pops off the screen.

ENHANCED COLOR

Compared to traditional 4K Ultra HD TVs, HDR technology provides an exceptionally wide color gamut — or range of colors — for the TV to display. Compare the color range on a TV to crayons. TVs with HDR technology play with bigger boxes of crayons, creating images with more shades of color to provide a vibrant picture that's closer to what the human eye perceives naturally in the world. HDR technology can look different on various TV models; explore your options in person at a Best Buy store.

SPECTACULAR CLARITY

A traditional 4K Ultra HD TV provides a huge benefit by delivering more pixels to your TV screen. Add High Dynamic Range technology and you build on this benefit. HDR enhances each of those pixels to provide you with an even clearer picture.

IMPROVED CONTRAST

HDR increases the difference between darks and lights, making dark colors much darker and bright colors much brighter. Shadows have more depth and there is clearer definition between bright images and dark images in your display.

HDR CONTENT

There are a couple of reasons to consider upgrading your home theater system with a 4K Ultra HD TV featuring HDR technology. First, an HDR TV will display all your current content, whether it's delivered by cable, satellite, antenna, a streaming service or a Blu-ray disc — and it will all look great. Second, you'll be ready to enjoy an upgraded experience as more HDR video content becomes available through streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, Fandango Now and others. 4K Blu-ray players that support HDR technology are currently on the market along with blockbuster 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR.

GET CONNECTED

While many high-quality HDMI cables will be able to carry the HDR content from the source to your TV, we recommend HDMI cables with a minimum bandwidth rating of 18Gbps, which often call out specific support for 4K and HDR, for the best performance with a 4K Ultra HD TV.

HOW TO KNOW IF A TV HAS HDR TECHNOLOGY

Many 4K Ultra HD TVs in the market that claim "HDR" or to be "HDR compatible" actually do not offer the fullest benefit in picture quality — they simply are able to accept and play HDR content. You can be assured that Best Buy will help you understand the benefits of High Dynamic Range across all our brands and help you find which TV is right for you.

Make your purchase from Best Buy with confidence. We carry only 4K Ultra HD TVs that pass our demanding standards, those that deliver the finest 4K picture and upscale your current content with the quality you expect. And we will label a product as HDR only when it is both HDR content-compatible and it provides a significant improvement in picture quality.

4K ULTRA HD FUTURE PROOF

The 4K Ultra HD TVs at Best Buy all have advanced technology, which will allow them to play all 4K content as standards evolve. They can also be easily enhanced through software updates (similar to software updates for your computer).

SURPRISINGLY AFFORDABLE

Most innovative technology goes to market with a high price tag. Since 4K Ultra HD TVs have been around for a few years, the price continues to drop, making them more mainstream and more affordable for consumers. Plus, Best Buy will match prices of identical products sold at qualifying online and local retailers.

HDR CAPTURE VS. HDR DISPLAY

Don't confuse HDR TV technology with the HDR technology you've probably seen on your smartphone or digital camera. A camera's HDR function essentially takes a series of photos and combines them into one shot in order to create higher contrast. HDR TVs actually generate that contrast within the pixels. The resulting contrast improvement and image quality is similar though, creating images on your screen that represent real-life color, contrast and clarity.
