What has eight legs, a big appetite, and brings terror to a desert community in this sci-fi thriller? A group of astronauts are performing scientific experiments with a spider aboard a space shuttle when the craft is struck by a solar flare. This brings about an unexpected reaction in the spider -- the bug begins to grow, and it attacks and kills the crew on board. Marci (Lana Parrilla) is a student journalist with a more-than-academic interest in conspiracy theories and UFOs; she's digging around in the desert looking for evidence of alien aircraft landings when the shuttle crashes to Earth -- and a monstrous spider crawls out. Marci and her friends try to convince the citizens of the nearby town that they're in grave danger, but given Marci's habit of reporting strange stories of dubious credibility, most people are loath to believe her until it's too late. Spiders also stars Josh Greene, and Oliver Macready. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
What happens when you cross an African King Cobra with an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake? You get one extremely large and ill-tempered reptile, and he's on the loose in the horror opus King Cobra. Dr. Irwin Burns (Joseph Ruskin) is developing an experimental drug that will increase aggression in humans and animals, so he breeds the perfect animal to test it on -- "Seth," a cobra/rattlesnake mix that's more intelligent than the average snake, much larger (30 feet long) and a good bit more dangerous. When an explosion destroys Burns' lab, Seth slithers off to freedom, and two years later he pops up in the small town of Fillmore. When several citizens are attacked by a large snake with unusually potent venom, local doctor Brad Kagen (Scott Brandon) and Police Chief Jo Biddle (Kasey Fallo) (who happen to be romantically involved) urge the mayor (Hoyt Axton) to cancel the city's annual beer festival. The festival brings in too many tourist dollars for the mayor to consider shutting it down, so Brad and Jo have to quickly capture the mutant snake before it can kill again. Fortunately, they have the help of Nick Hashimoto (Pat Morita), a snake expert who's been bitten so many times he has venom antibodies in his blood. King Cobra features special effects by the Chiodo Brothers, who previously created creatures for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Killer Klowns From Outer Space, and boasts a cameo appearance by Erik Estrada as a flamboyantly gay beer marketing expert. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
Sailors in the course of a dangerous mission are confronted with a new kind of terror in this monstrous thriller. A terrorist wanted in several nations is captured by authorities and sent to America to stand trial. The criminal is being transported aboard a heavily guarded submarine, in hopes of foiling any escape attempts, but the sub is forced to pass through "the Devil's Eye," a region at sea where a number of ships have been lost. The submarine's crew soon learns the secret of "the Devil's Eye" when the ship is attacked by a giant, prehistoric octopus. In the confusion, the terrorist escapes to a passenger ship, and the crew must find the fugitive as they fend of the vicious sea creature. Octopus stars Jay Harrington, David Beecroft, and Carolyn Lowery. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
