Crips Strapped 'n Strong
Many people think gang violence is a problem largely confined to North America, but the influence of gang culture has been making its way into unexpected places, as illustrated by filmmakers Joost van der Valk and Mags Gavan in this documentary. In the Dutch city of The Hague, immigrants from Suriname and the West Indies have formed their own chapter of the Crips, the notorious Los Angeles street gang; most of the first handful of Dutch Crips were part of The Hague's hip-hop and break-dancing community, but as their numbers grew, they attracted people who identified with the gangster lifestyle associated with the American Crips, and now the gang's membership is largely associated with crime, primarily drug dealing, and violent reprisals to threats within and outside their circle have become a part of daily life. Crips Strapped 'n Strong offers a look inside Dutch gang culture, and features candid interviews with several members of the gang, including dancer turned drug dealer Keylow; Santos, who is on the run from the police and wishes he could return to Suriname, and Main C, who after a stretch behind bars is trying to get out of gang life for the sake of his children. Crips Strapped 'n Strong was an official selection at the 2009 Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
