District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp teams with producer Peter Jackson for this tale of extraterrestrial refugees stuck in contemporary South Africa. It's been 28 years since the aliens made first contact, but there was never any attack from the skies, nor any profound technological revelation capable of advancing our society. Instead, the aliens were treated as refugees. They were the last of their kind, and in order to accommodate them, the government of South Africa set up a makeshift home in District 9 as politicians and world leaders debated how to handle the situation. As the humans begin to grow wary of the unwelcome intruders, a private company called Multi-National United (MNU) is assigned the task of controlling the aliens. But MNU is less interested in the aliens' welfare than attempting to understand how their weaponry works. Should they manage to make that breakthrough, they will receive tremendous profits to fund their research. Unfortunately, the highly advanced weaponry requires alien DNA in order to be activated. When MNU field operative Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is exposed to biotechnology that causes his DNA to mutate, the tensions between the aliens and the humans intensifies. Wikus is the key to unlocking the alien's technology, and he quickly becomes the most wanted man on the planet. Ostracized and isolated, Wikus retreats to District 9 in a desperate bid to shake his dogged pursuers. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

One of the BEST movies I have ever seen!
Posted by: alyssabsweet from: Bowling Green, KY on
When I was watching this movie, I was thinking it was going to be stupid because it was taking a while to get going with action. By the end of the movie, I was sitting on the edge of my seat and felt like I was in the movie. You get so engrossed into the story line that you don't even notice how fast the movie is going by! I can't WAIT for a sequal! :D

One of the best films of 2009
Posted by: DRFronkensteen from: NH on
Wow. THat is the first thing I thought when this film was over. It seemed like a breath of fresh air, something new in a summer filled with sequels and remakes. It puts a new twist on the common si-fi story of aliens visiting earth. District 9 takes place in Johannesburg South Africa. A large alien ship hovers over the town, setting up the story from the very first image on the screen. There is one thing about this story that sets it apart from other alien movies. The aliens are not here to invade the planet, eat our brains, or to share technology with us. They are refugees, starving and diseased. And I'll let you figure out the rest of the story from there. The film is presented in an odd fashion. About half is presented in an almost documentary style, with interviews spaced in between news footage and the infamous "shaky cam". The other half feels like a normal fictional movie. This may be annoying for some viewers, but the transitions between the two styles are seamless. The "shaky cam" is not overdone, it feels just about right. This original style really immerses you into the film, and makes you genuinely care about the characters. The acting is just superb. Sharlto Copley, who plays the lead role, does an amazing job. It is hard to believe this is his first major acting role.
You really need to see this film!! Don't get turned off by the first few minutes, it takes a little getting used to. I think you will be happy with it.
I read a few posts back that someone said this is an English movie. It is not. It was made in South Africa, by South African director, with all South African actors. One more note, there is LOTS of swearing and LOTS of violence in this movie. Not for children.

Very Solid Movie
Posted by: natronbacon from: cdga ny on
Good things: Loved the plot, which was based on incidents from the apartheid era (racial, not extraterrestrial) in South Africa. This is a very unique approach to this controversial topic. The main character goes through a wide range of emotions through the film, fear, shock, sadness, lonliness, anger, helplessness, selfishness, courage, hopeful, uncertain. The ending is a bit of a surprise as well. Not what I was expecting. It was filmed in the increasingly popular psuedo-documentary style, which is still somewhat unique for a major hollywood release, but somewhat common for low budget films (this was both). Sharlto Copley is excellant, and most of the film revolves around him, so it's hard to judge the acting (since the aliens are CGI, I don't think they were up for an oscar).
Bad things: CGI was a bit choppy at times. The exploding humans were a little cheesy, but on a small budget, this was not a surprise. The supporting actors won't blow anyone away, but none of them are developed either. If you love fairy tales, this movie isn't for you. The producers (Peter Jackson) got the most out of the money they had, but I suspect that some extra money would have helped.
Conclusion: This is the Bizzaro Avitar. Very good plot and acting, a bit weaker with its CGI and gritty documentary style. I liked this and couldn't care less about Avitar and its CGI. If that is you, you will like this movie.

Best Science Fiction movie ever!
Posted by: kris24 from: Chicago, IL on
District 9 is by far the best alien movie and may be one of the best movies ever made. From the very start of the film the great story and action are non-stop. The camera work is also excellent as the documentary style camera work puts you right in the middle of the action. A must own movie!

I though it was well done, I think that having different points of view from everyone that was in the movie shows something new. Gives you a sense of realism of what it would really be like to have alien living amongst us.

Loved this movie. At the beginning it was hard for me to get into it because it was documentary style, but the action quickly caught my attention and I was glued to my tv. Loved the movie. Loved the message it sent out.
