Although Emergency! had always been an extremely popular series amongst younger viewers, the property did not crack the Top 30 Nielsen ratings until its fourth season on NBC. Meanwhile, the series' fervent following amongst the 2-to-11 age demographic was being duly served by a successful Saturday-morning animated version, Emergency + 4. Season four of the nighttime Emergency! kicks off with an episode in which a callous Hollywood screenwriter makes life difficult for the paramedics of Squad 51 and the staffers of Ramparts hospital as he dogs their trail with tape recorder in hand for the purpose of researching his latest project. In later episodes, a suburban home is destroyed by an "inactive" oil well; a small airplane crashes into an apartment building; nurse Dixie McCall (Julie London) breaks her ankle during her own surprise birthday party; paramedic John Gage (Randolph Mantooth) drives his colleagues to distraction in his efforts to "capture" them for a photography contest; Lennie Weinrib (the voice of H.R. Pufnstuf, among other things) plays an overweight man whose crash diet nearly kills him; Keenan Wynn guest stars as a lonely old cowboy who fakes injuries for the purpose of getting attention -- and in so doing, seriously jeopardizes several other lives; and the father of Dr. Brackett (Robert Horton) turns up as a patient at Ramparts. The season ends with the episode "905-Wild," wherein the L.A. County Animal Control Department solicits the aid of the regulars when a wild tiger gets loose in a suburban supermarket! ~ Hal Erickson
