Synopsis

Still going strong as the top-rated prime time dramatic series amongst viewers aged 2 to 11, Emergency! sails effortlessly into its third season on NBC. Most of the familiar cast members are still in attendance: the staff of Ramparts Hospital, including doctors Brackett (Robert Horton), Early (Bobby Troup), and Morton (Ron Pinkard), and head nurse Dixie McCall (Julie London); and the paramedics of the L.A. County Fire Department's Squad 51, notably John Gage (Randolph Mantooth) and Roy DeSoto (Kevin Tighe). Replacing the paramedics' captain, Hammer (Dick Hammer), who figured prominently in the second-season episodes, is Captain Hank Stanley (Michael Norell), who will remain with the series until its conclusion. Season three opens with a typically busy and perilous episode, in which John Gage's cop friend is injured, the paramedics are unable to contact the hospital by phone, a youngster turns up intoxicated, the victims of a motorcycle gang war are shepherded into Ramparts, an artist is entrapped in his own giant sculpture, and two men are marooned at a crashed construction site. In later episodes, the paramedics consider purchasing an obsolete fire engine, a visiting fireman from England incites jealousy amongst the regulars, John is bitten by a poisonous snake, a fogbound freeway yields dozens of accident victims, an unknown benefactor wills a million dollars to Squad 51, and a hippie has a "bad trip" on daffodils bulbs. In the season's final episode, actress Yvonne Craig plays herself in a story involving sulfuric acid fumes and radiation poisoning. ~ Hal Erickson
