Harry Kurnitz' fictional book-dealer/detectives Joel and Garda Sloane appeared in three MGM "B"s of the late 1930s, each with different stars in the leads. Fast and Furious, the last of the mini-series, featured Franchot Tone and Ann Sothern as the Sloanes. The couple attends a seaside beauty contest, where a murder occurs. As Joel Sloane tries to solve the mystery, he is hindered by Garda, who isn't too keen on the many bathing belles present. Unlike the previous Sloane mysteries, no rare books are involved in the crime, and the film more closely resembles a pocket-edition Thin Man. Fast and Furious was directed by none other than Busby Berkeley, proving he was just as adept with corpses as with chorus girls. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
Fast Company was another attempt by MGM to match the success of its "Thin Man" films. Melvyn Douglas and Florence Rice star as Joel and Garda Sloane, the funloving rare-book dealers created by Harry Kurnitz. Try as they might, the Sloanes can't help getting involved in crime and murder. This time around, the couple searches for a con artist who has been ripping off the insurance companies by staging robberies of phony first editions. When murder rears its ugly head, Joel and Garda have four suspects to choose from, at least three of whom look incredibly guilty. Without providing any clues as to the outcome, it can be noted that the supporting cast includes such past masters of skullduggery as Louis Calhern, Douglass Dumbrille, George Zucco and Dwight Frye. Fast Company was the first of three "Joel and Garda Sloane" efforts, each one starring different actors in the leading roles. To avoid confusion with a later MGM film with the same title, Fast Company was rechristened Rare Book Murder for television. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
Fast and Loose
Fast and Loose was the second of MGM's brief "B" series based on Harry Kurnitz' husband-wife team of bookdealing sleuths, Joel and Garda Sloane. In Fast Company, the first of the series, Melvyn Douglas and Florence Rice played the Sloanes; in this second entry, the characters are portrayed by Robert Montgomery and Rosalind Russell. The murder victim this time is a celebrated rare book collector, and the motive is a missing first edition of Paradise Lost. The supporting cast included several likely suspects, including old reliable Ralph "Anything I Can Do to Help?" Morgan. Fast and Loose might have been faster and looser had it been shorter than 80 minutes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
