I keep a pretty weird schedule and end up running myself pretty ragged most days. so I figured I should quantify some of my madness. this device will keep track of my steps, calories, the number of flights of stairs i walk, and even my sleep. it has a run and an exercise menu both with their own section of activities which can monitor your vitals as you perform your workout. Supposedly the fitbit surge can change the music on you device, but i haven't been able to get it to work yet. Apparently the surge does this through something called AVRCP bluetooth profile, which your music program app needs to have in order to work. guess what? none of my music apps do so I'm basically out of luck. lame. i'm currently researching for an app that does. speaking of apps, the fitbit app works pretty good with device. it does occasionally have trouble connecting to the fitbit for a second or two, but usually when you hit the sync button a second or third time it eventually does connect. it does an fine job of displaying everything, though i felt the user interface could be a little better. especially when you want to add/change alarms. it is interesting to discover how i do day to day or week to week with everything I do (sleep, eat, weigh, how much fluids i consume, how often i'm physically active). you can even add your friends and see how you do compared to them. on a weekly basis you will receive an email from fitbit that will show your stats for the week and what your laziest day was. my advice for any new users setting up their account, don't try to log onto the program with your google+ account initially. you'll just screw yourself up and need tech support to reset your password especially when you try to set it up on your phone app since there's no way to log on via google+ (especially when you have 2 step verification and even if you use the proper method as prescribed by the google app password). First create your password, profile, and preferences and AFTER you have done all that you can then add your google+ to your account. it took two weeks for me to resolve my problems before i could really use my fitbit surge to its full extent due to this. Also try not to lose your charging cable or the dongle that comes with it as each are $20 if you lose them. Last time I looked I could only find it through the fitbit website itself, though ebay did appear to have a few for sale. The battery on my watch went down a little faster than the manual said it would, but I could only account that to where I work. I work in radiology at two hospitals and for some reason despite not having any programs on it seems to put a heavier drain to the battery. So I wanted an extra cable to carry with me. I didn't realize they'd be $20 though so I haven't gotten one yet. well, that's what i think. buy one and give your own two cents.

Been using my Surge for about a month now. Pros: - it is a watch, it even verges on being a superwatch; I have mine set up with the old fashioned analog face (and I get lots of questions & comments about it) - heart rate & sleep tracking without any additional equiptment, apps, nor fuss - quasi-reliable automatic exercise tracking (it knows when I've gone for an intentional walk or run without me having to give it input - however, see caveat below) Cons: - I have small size on an avg female wrist, and it's a bit clunky - I used to use Jawbone Up, and I find the Fitbit application much less helpful &/or motivational (?)... I dunno, I just miss Jawbone nuggets of wisdom and the ease of maneuvering the application - this is my caveat to the aforementioned "Pro" - when I walk/run (as opposed to either walking OR running), it only gives me credit for a portion of the time I'm out on the road - unless I use the "Begin Exercise" function with the buttons on the device, and select "hike," which I find annoying. Note, I have not taken the time to learn all the ways that I could tweak my user experience, but this is likely b/c I was spoiled by that nonrequirement with my Jawbone device.
