    Synopsis

The 1960's television series Flipper has arrived on DVD, looking and sounding better than it has in decades (and maybe ever -- how good were the color television sets that were available in 1965?). The full-screen (1.33-to-1) transfers bring out all of the rich color of the Florida location shooting, and what was then state-of-the-art underwater photography; and assuming that one can get past the squeaky clean plotting and the family at the center, this is still a great show for younger kids. Additionally, beyond those members of the generation that grew up with the series, older viewers with an interest in production might find it worth more than a glance or two, as most of the show -- especially the underwater sequences -- was the work of director Ricou Browning (best remembered today for portraying the underwater incarnation of the "gillman" in Creature From The Black Lagoon and Revenge of the Creature; but also responsible for the underwater action sequences in Thunderball). It's Browning's work as a director here that made the series work as well as it did in the action category of the period, and it holds up today in that department. (There's also a kind of "in" joke episode, "Flipper's Monster", which gets Browning back into an underwater monster suit on camera and has all kinds of references hinting at Creature From The Black Lagoon). Each platter opens to the same easy-to-use single-layer menu, and there are no bonus features, just 33 episodes of surprisingly engaging yet innocent action and fun, all of it with a very early take on modern environmentalism that makes the show play even better today. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
