Good GPS with too many features
Posted by: LouisK from: Phoenixville PA on
I purchased this unit to replace a Nuvi 65LMT that bricked after an update. I was in a crunch but wanted the 6 inch screen and the full North America maps. Here are my observations so far:
A lot of people have made a big deal about the screen being glossy and not matte. Yes it is hard to see in direct sun, but adjusting the angle slightly seems to fix this problem easily. Also the glossy glass screen is way easier to clean and also clearer at night.
This unit wants to warn you. About every thing. Repeatedly. I am still struggling to turn it all off, but in the space of driving one block I received notifications for: an upcoming school, a church, a curve, an animal crossing (still confused about that one). I would;t mind but by default these are visual and audio warnings. Basically, the GPS would never shut up. I finally found out how to turn off the auditory alerts, but you still get visual warnings that can block out the maps and the distance indicator. I am hoping this is fixed in a future firmware release.
The search function has a preference for locations that are tagged in foursquare, Unfortunately this can get confusing when you have more than one location around with the same name as it will rank the foursquare higher ever when it is farther away. Luckily it changes the location icon so you get a hint that it was picked due to foursquare and not distance.
It seems to have a weird problem with detours. If you detour on a route it will occasionally disable the turn by turn prompts. I have had this happen 4 times so far. After talking to Garmin support I found out this is a known bug and will be fixed in a future upgrade.
It loves giving you a ton of info. Between the lane information, turn assistance and the years old snap shots of some intersections it always seems to be popping up a sun screen. As I live at the edges of suburbia I probably see this more than some one more rural so your milage will very on this.
Keeping all this in mind, I have barely gotten into all the features that are packed into this unit. I just wanted a simple offline GPS that could do turn by turn voice prompts with a big screen. This device does so much more that it can actually be distracting.
All in all it is a good unit if you LOVE gadgets and it does as advertised. But if all you want is a basic widescreen GPS with turn by turn and lane indicators - you might want to keep looking.

I bought this Garmin for a 5000 mile road trip across the USA and back.
The screen is easy to read and large enough to be effective in any situation. Too bad the Garmin maps are NOT up to date. I stayed in 8 different hotels over the span of three weeks on my trip. I made sure to check for and download the current map before I left. Three of the addresses I needed to drive to did NOT exist according to Garmin. They DID show up on Google maps. I had to use a nearby location for each in order to get close then find the hotels. These were in cities of Amarillo TX, Tulsa OK and Greenville SC... so there was no reason for them NOT to be in the Garmin map database. These properties had all been in existence for 2-4 years

I like my new Garmin!
Posted by: AlanD96 from: on
I've purchased Garmin GPS units since they became available so many years ago and didn't even have enough memory for maps.
This new one is a nice improvement. The screen is big and very legible without being over sized.
I like the new spoken directions in the new units. Instead of "Turn Left on Main Street" it says, "Turn left at the stop light" etc. The animated visual lane indications on highways are also much better than previous models. The hardware is better too, my older unit used to constantly fall out of its window bracket. This unit is much more secure and the on/off power button is easy to find and press.
The one thing that I don't like about these units and which has NOT changed here is even if you constantly download the newest Garmin map updates, you'll STILL see restaurants and shops that have closed years ago, and new changes to highways are usually not found for a year or more. I've just downloaded the second version of the "2017" Garmin map (even though it's only July 2016) and old restaurants are still listed and the newer ones haven't found their way to the GPS.
That being said, I'm still very happy with my new Garmin DriveSmart GPS and would recommend this to anyone.

Out of the box it required an update, which was simple to do. I have the settings to always select the fastest route. Works well, alerts you to upcoming curves, school zones, speed limit changes, and displays the current speed limit on the screen. I haven't yet received any traffic alerts, or been in a situation where one was needed, so I can not comment on that part. The only drawback seems to be the voice commands. it works good until you try to speak a street name. I have tried many times many different ways, and it never gets it right.

Nice screen size, lots of info, voice recognition
Posted by: WeiberBlitz from: on
Having been a Garmin owner for over 10 years, it seemed time to step up with a newer device. The DriveSmart 60LMT helps keep you on track at Interstate exits and interchanges with emphatic reminders of what lane you should be in.
The down sides include challenges to customizing your route as it is time consuming to insert via points that forces the Garmin into the route YOU want to use.
The voice recognition is poor. You can enunciate with the precision of Walter Cronkite, but the DriveSmart 60LMT will hear "pizza" in place of plaza." There does not seem to be any 'intelligent learning' that improves the choices presented over time. Exasperating, frustrating beyond description.

I love this gps . Screen is big which is good for me to see the street names cause i wear glasses i would usually quit because I couldn't see the street names I love that when you were driving it showed you little icons of gas stations are restaurants would be coming up to and it's voice activated so that we could just stay where you want to go instead of having to type it in the touch the screen while you're driving. It has a split screen so you know which lane to be in which i found to be very helpfull when i was driving to mexico and i had to drive threw LA with all its lanes for my first time driving their i left really confident i wouldnt get lost cause of the gps and its split screen .All in all its a really good probuct i love it .

Great navigation device; Garmin Drivesmart LMT
Posted by: ChetMcLazer from: on
The 60 LMT - 6 GPS replaced an aging Garmin. This company has a respectable history of producing great, solid products. This new unit will link up to satellite much quicker than the unit it replaced. The advanced warning features, alerting you to intersection photo cameras, curvy roads, school zones. If you live in the city, this can get annoying as it will go off frequently. Luckily you can disable this feature, however, I decided to keep in enabled.
The touch screen is shiny instead of matted, so you may have to find the perfect angle that it doesn't produce as much glare.
The graphics are crisp and the larger screens are more usable in split screen mode.
I'm satisfied with my purchase and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to friends.

It just was not usable. The brightness was so dark that you could not see the map. The brightness control would let you adjust it, but then went back to its original setting as soon as you left the settings screen. We had to take it right back to the store.

This thing is a life saver when you are going on a long trip. We drove over 2500 miles round trip and it navigated us without a hiccup. Advised us of slow traffic, gave us the best rout with the fastest drive time. Great buy for long trips. Saves your phone data and worries about issues where you are in a area where there are few cell phone towers. Also came with a neat window mount.

Absolutely amazing, screen is not too big...
Posted by: Frasermkt from: on
Absolutely amazing, screen is Large enough to see (I'm 50) and small enough not to obstruct my view of front windshield. It displays my phone calls, plays my ringtones through the unit. Tells if the the red light I'm about to run has a traffic camera...lol
