Bought this microwave a year and a half ago and the handle broke off the door. Also the finish on the door around the window is cracking and falling off. Tried to call GE support but was not able to speak with a human. I would not recommend this product or any other GE products based on this experience.

I just bought a newer version of this microwave because it was recommended by Consumer Report. I had an older version from 2006 of this model which I was satisfied with. This microwave's vents are in the back of the unit and the sucton is very poor and will not draw steam or smoke if you are sauteeing. Had to call GE, they sent technicIan and that is what I was told. Poor design. Very dissatisfied.

As these units only last 2-3 years with normal use I am glad they are fairly cheap. I installed these above the range microwaves in many of my rental properties and with heavy use they do not last long. (Just until the extended warranty expires) Interesting?

works for all I have needed it to do- everyday microwave tasks. Make sure you hire an outside installer. Best Buy contractors charge almost the cost of the microwave (around $150 or more) to install it and it was done incorrectly which is why it only lasted two years! I hired an outside local installer who charged $70 and he discovered my last mocrowave was not vented properly- did not blow air out- which caused it to burn out.

Good basic over range microwave

Bought this as part of a kitchen remodel.
Installed relatively easily, and cooks just fine. Initially the cooktop lights were of different intensities, and one burnt out after 3 days. Had a heck of a time finding the right bulb, as most are too long and last about a hour. Finally ordered from GE parts online, but not cheap. I hope the new bulb lasts longer!

Turntable stopped working the second day (and yes we tried the "turntable" button numerous times to no avail). Microwave would stay on after pushing the "off/cancel" button. Door feels clunky to open and close (loud). To get it fixed we either have to uninstall the entire thing and take it to a GE Service center or pay for a tech to come out. We have owned it for two weeks and are very regretful!

Overall satisfied - bit of leg work

I bought this to replace an older model that had run its course. I was hoping the installation was easy since I was just swapping out models, however, GE updated the configuration of the screw placement on the back of the unit and I had to go and reaffix the new backplate to my kitchen wall. Totally installation time is under 3 hours and directions could be somewhat better. I am happy with the product overall and hope it lasts another 5 years like my last one.

GE - 1.6 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave

I replaced a ten year old Spacemaker XL1800 (HDM1853WJ) with this and overall I’m very pleased. I wanted to share my thoughts.
Installation: First, make sure you turn the vent motor and install the charcoal filter (included) if it’s going to recirculate. This is laid out very clearly in the instructions and is simple to do.
One of the reasons I bought another GE was because I was hoping to be able to use the existing wall bracket and maybe the holes required in the cabinet above the microwave would also line up. Got lucky with the former, not the latter. It sat on the wall bracket OK, and although the holes pattern was close, I had to drill new holes.
Use: As another reviewer pointed out, it’s difficult to see if your food is boiling over. Cooking oatmeal poses a challenge! It’s not impossible to see, but harder than it was with my previous microwave. I also don’t like that it “forgets” you put food in it. What I mean is that if you put food in it, walk away for a few minutes, then come back and turn it on it tells you to put food in the microwave. All you have to do is open and close the door, but still a pain and different from the previous GE I owned. On the positive side, it does a fine job doing what it’s supposed to do. Plenty of power settings and cooking options. I also like that it has two levels (high and low) for both the surface light and the vent fan.

Payed for a new microwave, received a damaged one

I researched this microwave online and then went to the store to purchase only to find out they don't keep it in stock. Had to order from store and ship to home. It arrived in only a few days but after opening, I found out it was dented across the top. The box was fine so I was concerned that it was dropped/dented before being packed. I called Best Buy and after discussing with the associate I was told if I kept the microwave Best Buy would submit a request to GE to contact me for either a monetary discount for the dent or possibly an extended warranty as I was nervous there might be damage internally beyond the denting I could see externally.
Since the microwave mounts to the cabinets, the denting would be hidden and I didn't really want to wait for another microwave to ship so I took this option. Assuming GE would call and offer some sort of compensation since I was assured they would. They never did...
So far the microwave seems to be working fine but beware if the same happens to you. It might be better to send back the damaged microwave since they don't follow through with any compensation. I ended up paying full price for damaged goods.
