Great for the money

Google Daydream is a great entry point into the world of VR. They aren't knocking your door down with tons of games, but what's available is super cool. YouTube has some fantastic 360 degree videos. Since Google owns YouTube, I'd expect that library to grow steadily. I get a bit of motion sickness here and there but not to the point of souring the experience. Often the pointer gets out of alignment but a simple 2 second hold of the home button gets that fixed. For those expecting high quality, well developed games, this isn't anywhere near the level of Vive or Rift. Obviously comparing an $80 piece of hardware to stuff that is $600 and up isn't realistic. I think at this price point, Daydream is a solid experience worth checking out.

Excellent entry into VR
Posted by: Gustavo from: on
First and foremost it needs to be understood that this VR headset is only compatible with phone that are Day Dream Compatible. If you got this, and were confused about not being able to charge it, here's a clue: your phone isn't compatible! The only two devices that are compatible as of this review are the Google Pixel and Pixel XL. Both devices come with USB-C chargers, which can be used to charge the pointer. Also note that the pointer my unit was already charged enough to use it out of the box in the parking lot of Best Buy.
As for the experience. Obviously a phone powering a passive headset isn't going to compete with $2500 gaming rig. That's not the aim of this product. Instead, it's a simplified introduction into VR gaming - and a fantastic platform for watching videos. Youtube 360' 3D videos are insanely cool - especially the shark one. Watching full movies on Google Play is awesome - especially with a good over ear headset.
And then non-gaming, non-video applications. Did you grow up in another country - and want to virtually walk the streets of your old stomping grounds? Street maps in 360 may just bring a tear to your eye.
It's a powerful immersive experience for the masses. Once more devices (and cheaper ones) become compatible with Day Dream, a world of opportunity is going to open up for people who were previously priced out of the VR segment.
Final thought: Portability. You can't use your rift or vive on a plane (unless its your private jet with your gaming rig hooked up). With Day Dream, you might look like a total dork doing it, but at least you CAN watch a movie and escape into another world while sitting on a plane. Its fantastic.

Since they recently went on sale, I decided to purchase a Daydream View VR Headset to use with my Pixel. It's been a fun experience with only a few minor hiccups.
The 360 videos are impressive. The games are fun. The 360 photos available are really nice. Most things are done pretty well and look good. It's still s a relatively small universe right now, though; but I expect more content as time goes by.
The headset is pretty comfortable if you wear it correctly (more like a crown than ski goggles). The remote is incredibly handy, and controls are easy to master.
I am using the headset with a standard 5" Pixel. I've seen reviews that complain about the Pixel vs the Pixel XL with Daydream. I've never used an XL, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good everything looks on the standard Pixel. If you have a standard Pixel, like I do, don't be scared away from the Daydream headset.
As for negatives, every now and then something (a scene or the Play Store) seems to just get stuck. The phone runs pretty hot during VR use, but that's expected. Of course, VR apps will eat more of your memory, so you may have to have some aggressive storage settings if you have the base 32GB Pixel.
The Daydream is more of a fun novelty right now than anything else. Nothing about the Daydream headset will dramatically change your life, but it can add a little extra entertainment and fun to it. If you have a Daydream ready phone (Pixel or certain Moto phones, as of mid-Feb 2017), it's certainly worth the low entry price to try it out.

Amazing! So much fun!
Posted by: D1sp0sable from: on
Picked up my Daydream the day it came out. It has been so much fun. Watching the 4k VR videos on the YouTube app is an amazing experience. It would be great if there were more apps but with just starting out I think Google has done an amazing job with this so far.
Only downside is that the phone does get pretty warm and the lenses fog up because there is no air flow.

Nice design but it's still in beta!
Posted by: StarfighterZ from: on
The design aesthetics is great and looks wonderful but from a performance aspect it's just Google cardboard all dressed up for the prom and works no different from it's cheaper sibling. The VR looks good but you have to get it just right or things kinda have a slight blur to them but YMMV? I found the headset to be comfortable but not for extended periods of time. The biggest issue to me was the overheating of the Pixel phone when using it for more than 30 minutes or playing a graphic intensive game. Maybe if Google designed a passive cooling system in v2 this wouldn't be such an issue. Right now it's a fun toy for short periods of use and once more games and apps are able to better take advantage it might be more worthwhile. If your curious about VR and already have a Pixel then go for it but remember it's still in beta.

Great for a beginner VR experience
Posted by: Vinal from: on
Well, it's been 4 days since I've had this device. I'm already addicted to it. Great for a beginner experience. Amazing controller which lets you navigate through all the apps in the VR world.
Tons of 360 videos in Youtube VR
Great design, very light.
Daydream app only compatible with Pixel phones, although you can use many other VR apps from play store for samsung or any other devices
Phone heats up quickly on some of the apps

Different than Gear VR, but good
Posted by: GAtoNY from: loganville, ga on
I've got both Gen 1 and Gen 2 gear VR headsets and now daydream on my Z Force. I like getting VR apps in the play store (vs the oculus store) and the daydream wand is much better than the swipe pad navigation on the side of gear VR.

Great product for the price

This is great for watching a movie and other VR apps. The head strap needs some work though. It loosens easily, much too easily, and can make readjusting it tiresome. However, for the price it's definitely worth it.

Works great with Axon 7
Posted by: JayFlow from: on
I bought this to pair with my Axon 7 now that it has Nougat. I'm very pleased. It's not perfect, but no VR that's out right now is. It works great and it's fun to use. I just hope they come out with more apps.
