This 120 minute video captures many of the top snowboarding performances from the 1999 Winter Gravity Games. Originally broadcast as an NBC Sports television special, the Gravity Games are the network's response to the popular X-Games broadcast on ESPN. Held on Mammoth Mountain in California, the snowboarding events pitted the top professional snowboarders against one another in events like Quarterpipe, Superpipe, Big Air and Boardercross. All the high-quality footage of the events was shot by NBC cameras, whereas the production and editing seem to be cheap imitations of MTV Sports' brazen attitude and dizzying jump cuts. Of course NBC's "big network" sensibilities come through in the overly simple questions proffered during interviews with the athletes and the very standard announcer banter. Though this video may not earn much street credibility with hardcore snowboarding fans, the photography and the performances themselves are enough to satisfy the toughest critics. Highlights from several other Gravity Games events have also been released in the videos Gravity Games: Skateboarding and Gravity Games: Motocross. ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi
Gravity Games: Chills and Spills
The first Winter Gravity Games were held at Mammoth Mountain. See what athletes will do to their bodies in the name of sport. Watch skiers, snowmobilers, and snowboarders lose control. Witness some nasty crashes, crunched bones, and wipeouts that aren't softened by the snow. The snow doesn't soften the blows to the participant's dignity either. Gravity has its chilling vengeance on these athletes who sacrifice it all for their respective sports. ~ Linda J. Shriver, Rovi
Gravity Games: Skiing
Gravity Games: Skiing is a sports video for extreme ski enthusiasts. Some of the most daring athletes ever to strap two boards to their feet perform jumps that seem to defy the laws of gravity. Plunging through the earth's gravitational pull, these skiers fly across the sunny blue sky, land expertly, and start all over again. Footage is fast-paced and adrenaline-raising throughout. Star skiers Shaun Palmer, Jonny Mosely, Shane McConkey, and others shoot down steep mountains and annihilate the snow. ~ Betsy Boyd, Rovi
