i had a canister style and a bagless and i like this one the best. for starters,i got tired of dragging canister around and cleaning the cloth filter/bag-thing. the bagless was alright but kept getting mold/mildew in filters and in the dust cup after washing them no matter how long i sat it out to dry. then you gotta WAIT for it to dry. the first time i didnt notice it and turned the vacuum on and the smell was HORRID. i couldnt get the smell out of my house for a WHILE. i think it's more of an inconvience to keep cleaning the dust cup out than to simply pop in a new bag. no need to wait for anything to dry! the suction on those 2 were decent. but this Tempo is what's happening now! great suction. easy to use. lightweight. freshened up the appearance of my carpet nicely. works on floor good. etc, etc, etc!!!! Glad i went back to ol' school vacuum!! and still get the HEPA micro-allergen benefits of these new vacuums thanks to new bag technology. i should've been switched back. who cares about windtunnels and cyclones, right?!!!?!?!!!!! LOL!

Overall excellent except for one shortcoming...

This vac works great overall, and is a great value.
Does everything a vac should do. Only minor complaint is that the attachment hose is kind of short, which causes the whole vacuum to tip over if you are not careful while using the attachments. I just get around that by tipping it over before starting with the hose.

Great Vacuum for Price
Posted by: kimbah from: Mentor, OH on
This is the 4th Hoover Tempo that I have purchased. You cannot beat the suction on these vacuums for the price. They don't last forever, but typically get 5+ years out of them. I have a dog that sheds excessively and this vacuum picks up dog hair and cleans edges like none other. I bought a more expensive vacuum in the past designed specifically for pet hair and ended up returning it and buying another Tempo. My only complaint is the hose on my most recent Tempo. Although it is exactly the same model that I previously purchased, the hose has been modified and it is very inflexible. Previous hoses have been a softer plastic that bends more easily. Barring the hose issue, this is an excellent vacuum for the price. The suction on the attachment is extremely strong. Definitely recommend it..

We now own three of these. Great product.

We learned of this model in a major consumer reporting magazine and were delighted that it was top rated at a very low price. We bought one for our beach house, it works great. The second came home, and the third is with my daughter in college. Cleans very well, the allergy filter is great and it's relatively light so it's easy to use.
The one drawback is the length of the hose for attachments, but this is minor compared to the positive features.
You don't know me, but I am telling you the truth when I say that I think you will like this cleaner.

It's a Beast.

All other reviews here are valid. The carpet height lever works best when in it's full upright position. The suction is truly insane and with power comes responsibility. Hopefully you will use this power tool for the good of humanity and not for evil. Cleaning area rugs can be frustrating because of the power of this cleaner and the bare floor setting seemed to offer an almost fair fight. Because of this, it is a slight drawback. Also, it is light, it does tip a bit when using the attachments so that is a slight drawback but if you want a heavier vacuum - more power to you. I too purchased this vacuum based off of a Consumer Reports magazine review.

Simple vacuum that works great
Posted by: Annaka from: Northern Virginia on
We bought this vacuum because we needed one right away and didn't want to pay a lot of money. The reviews were all great so we felt OK paying less than $90 for a vacuum. It works so well! We had new carpet installed 6 months ago that still shed and our old vacuum did nothing for, but this one really cleaned everything the first time. It's a little self-propelled which is nice, it's not too heavy, and has worked well on different surfaces for us. Not the prettiest vacuum out there, but really great quality for the money.

After several years and several different models of bag-less canister uprights, we've gone back to the tried and true. This vacuum does exactly what it should: removes dust and pet hair and lets me dispose of it in a tidy manner. No more billowing clouds of dust rising from the trash while emptying a canister; no more dirt-caked filters to clean; no more wiping down the vacuum to clean up all the dust from emptying the canister.
The bags are large, easy to remove and easy to replace. The model I purchased did not have the headlight nor bag change indicator, as pictured online (the display model at the store wasn't the stripped down version I bought either), but I doubt I'll miss those features. I wish the hard plastic panel that covers the bag was a little sturdier or even hinged (it's a tab and slot design), but it still looks like it will hold up as long as it's not roughly treated. The on-board tools are good, but as another reviewer noted, the hose is a bit short. But it's lightweight, easy to maneuver (convenient handles make it easy to tote upstairs) and boy, does it have suction power! Highly recommend this one.

It sucks in a good way!

I have honestly only used this vacuum twice and it has been great!
My old vacuum was so terrible, this vacuum with one use filled the bag!
Dog hair, dust and whatnot. Great on my wood floors, stairs and carpet!
Plus the price point is excellent. So far the reviews on this have been
Exactly as stated. It's great. Although it would be nice if the hose was a little longer.

This vacuum is light and easy to operate. It is by far the best we have ever owned.

Basic but powerful.
Posted by: KeliGellar from: Charlestown, MA on
I purchased this based on the review by Consumer Reports and my experiences with bagless vacuums that died within a year of purchase. Upon opening the box, I found a really stripped down model that was very basic and had no frills. No headlamp, a modest set of tools, and one bag that would only accommodate two uses before needing to be replaced. However, it had a good review, I only had to install a few bolts, and it fit my budget so I took it for a spin.
DO NOT LEAVE IT UNATTENDED WHILE IT'S ON.
It is LOUD, but powerful - on floors and carpet. My previous vacuum couldn't hold a candle to this vacuum's suction. It vacuumed my carpets like they'd never been vacuumed before. And, it is pretty good on floors. However, do not leave it unattended while it's on - even when it's in the upright position - it will devour whatever it's on! Additionally, it's powerful enough to effectively vacuum and use the hose simultaneously.
When you factor in the cost of the bags you'll need on an ongoing basis, this isn't the steal of a deal you may think it is. However, it's so effective that I would buy it again.
