This is my first robot vacuum. I had done extensive research on different brands and models for about 2 years and wasn't completely satisfied with what was out there in terms of technology. I always thought these units should be connected to wifi. Finally I had seen that iRobot has incorporated wifi connectivity amongst visual mapping navigation. The unit also finally vacuum in straight lines and not random bump and turn lines. All in all I was very satisfied from day one. The setup and scheduling was a breeze using the smart phone app. It was up and running in under 15 minutes and the 980 was finding it's way around the house. It managed to finish most of the upstairs area on the first run before running low on battery. It made it's way back to the charge station, filled up on juice and made it's way back to the spot where it left off to finish the job. Quite amazing. Only addition I would like to see is a beefed up app with charts/graphs. Perhaps show the visual map the iRobot has drawn to see progress of task and perhaps a calculated percentage and time of completion. I'll be adding a second unit to my home for downstairs. Great product! Hopefully long term reliability is not an issue but only time will tell.

The best yet from iRobot
Posted by: Steven575 from: Churchton, MD on
I've owned a 400 series, 500 series, a 700 for about a week. After owning the 770 for a week, I decided to upgrade to the 980, I am sure glad I did. The mapping technology that iRobot has implemented into this model is what makes this a complete vacuum replacement. It gets everywhere! It even knows which rooms it's been in and which to go to next, mapping your entire house, very cool. The vacuum is simply amazing, saves my injured back, and my wife time, especially with a toddler running around. The 980 is definitely worth the upgrade, scheduling and controlling from my phone is a plus. The build quality is superb as well. Very pleased with my purchase!

Makes cleaning much simpler
Posted by: RaggedRocks from: on
My wife and I had discussed buying a robot vacuum cleaner. She was adamant against it for the house, so I decided to buy this for my home office as a Xmas present for myself. We set it up on Christmas day and within 10 minutes of operations, my wife said it would never see my home office.
So we have been using it for the last 3 weeks and here are my observations:
1.) The unit lives up to its claim to not get entangled with cords and carpets.
2.) Cleaning a 1,700 sq ft single level has been taking about 5 hours; Much more time than if we were going to vacuum manually. But no one has to be there when it is vacuuming and it is not a big deal do multiple vacuuming a week keeping the house very clean (or at least the carpet). Just use the app to schedule the vacuuming to start on a work day as soon as everyone has left. When you get home the house will be clean.
3.) The bin is not really as big as required for my house. The good news its when it is filled it will return to home and post a message to the app. Empty the bin and it will continue cleaning. But once we scheduled the unit to run multiple times per week, then we found we could run the unit during the day without it stopping for a bin emptying. And besides running the unit multiple times a week makes the house look nice.
4.) The Roomba 980 has no problems with pine needles ... but remember my earlier comment about bin capacity.
5.) The battery seems to last between 1-2 hours. When the battery runs out of juice it goes back to the home station to recharge for about 50 minutes.
6.) If you have clutter on the floor it will go in seemingly random patterns. I did some testing last week and was able to verify that it really does cover all of the non-cluttered parts of the floor. But there does seem to be a slight miss in corners.
7.) One of the most interesting advantages to the Roomba is everyone knows they need to keep the clutter off the floor for best vacuuming. This human factor is really keeping the house looking clean.
8.) Disappointed that the Roomba 980 cannot get under our sofas as I saw in a couple of YouTubes. So periodically we will still need to bring out the vacuum cleaner.
9.) Addressing the elephant in the room, this unit is expensive. But at $100-200 for a cleaning service each month, I am already seeing that the unit is going to save money (even if we break down and purchase a second unit) and the house is already cleaner than when we had a cleaning lady.
10.) The unit automatically adjusts the intensity as it moves between hardwood and carpeted floors. Unfortunately, when it is going over the carpets it is as loud as a regular vacuum cleaner. So, you don't want to run it while your favorite TV series is playing...this comes back to my earlier recommendation to run it during the day.
11.) The spot cleaning feature is interesting. The Roomba 980 weighs less than our old vacuum cleaners, so it is easy to pickup the unit and drop it in the center of a mess and then engage the spot cleaning. But I have to confess we generally just grab the old vacuum cleaner (old habits)
12.) The documentation says to clean the filters and rollers regularly. After only 3 weeks of usage it is quite clear that you MUST take their recommendation seriously. If the filter gets clogged the incredible cleaning ability possible with the unit reduces. Good news it is easier to clean the Roomba 980 than any other vacuum cleaner we have owned (including the dyson).
13.) Lastly, with all the cat on the roomba videos out there I was expecting to see one of the cats try to catch a ride. The reality is they can't be bothered with the unit and generally just ignore the roomba while it is working.
Now if we only can get an iRobot which can clean the bathroom and do stairs.

Efficient and effective

I bought this Roomba 980 when we moved into our new house. The house has a relatively open floor plan, approx. 3000 sq ft. The first floor is all hardwood flooring. We have a golden retriever and a 16 month old grandchild. I knew it would be a challenge to keep the floors clean and free of dog hair so I bought the Roomba, hoping it would do the job. I have only used it on the first floor because the dog is not allowed upstairs. The Roomba 980 does a great job!!! I know this is a little pricey but I am a pretty harsh critic with stuff like this and I think it is worth the every penny. I have a couple of area rugs and the Roomba easily moves onto and off the rugs, getting rid of the dog hair and anything else on the wood floors and carpet alike. One wool rug is new and sheds a lot so I usually have to empty the machine once before its done. Before the battery dies, the machine does return to its base to recharge! Pretty amazing! It's good to be able to get some other stuff done while the Roomba does the vacuuming.

Our Roomba is Great!
Posted by: MrGene from: on
I was a bit skeptical at first, this wasn't the unit I had set my sights on but we (Yes - we! My wife and I) have been quiet impressed! We recently had 1100 sq. ft. Of flooring installed and was a little concerned about "dust accumulation" as some of our friends suggested, this was a concern because of my wife's back injuries; however, I can honestly say "after running our Roomba 980 Robot Vacuum twice weekly this hasn't been an issue" the vacuum keeps our floors as stunning as the first day they were installed! As its been said, "Happy Wife, Happy Life"!!!! I would definitely recommend this product to anyone, we've had our Roomba 980 for 2 months and have enjoyed the ease of use, cleanness of our floors, and there is also less dust on the furniture - my wife says "she loves her Jenny (the name we selected for our Roomba) because like Forest Gump, she just keeps on running"!!!!

Its ABOUT Time!

I have owned a lot of Roombas and returned them all because they were basically dumb robots. I purchased a Neato which are very intelligent and do a great job of vacuuming , but after 3 months you start getting error codes that are all software related that Neato fails to fix but keeps pumping out new bots inspite of this, I had to return them 5 times in 8 months, not to mention they have no repair shop after warranty expires and awful customer service. I returned all those as well even though I hated to because I did love its performance and intelligence. So finally IRobot decides to implement some of the technology that the Neato and other robots started years ago, hence my 4 star rating. IRobot has great customer service, and repair after the warranty runs out, so this is the PRICE you have to pay for that, which is pretty steep. Im happy that the Roomba 980 vacuums In straight lines, remembers where its been, and recharges and leaves again to finish the job if the battery ran low during the cleaning cycle. However!!! with the Roomba set to automatically switch to high gear on carpet, it only vacuums my 1900sq ft level for 45 minutes (which is comparable to the Neato when I had it, and my carpet is in the living room only, which is about 12 x 15 medium pile thick) it does recharge and continues where it left off. BUT this is where the real disappointment comes in, it DOESNT stay in one room and move to the next like the Neato, and it DOESNT work with the lighthouses from the 800 series to keep it in one room and then move to the next. For this price I expected to have this. It does vacuum very well. But without those two features I couldn't decide if I wanted to keep it for this price. However, I am sure that IRobot will come out with an update to fix this instead of producing another Roomba that will do this. In fact, if they come out with a new Roomba that will do this at a steeper price instead of updating this 980 to do it, I will never buy another IRobot product, im tired of playing the game. So as of now I am keeping it, as it does perform very well. I have only had it 3 days so I will update if it starts throwing error codes in the next couple months.

I bought the newest and most expensive Roomba. I paid $899 minus a coupon and a gift card. I probably paid about $300 total out of my pocket. I feel at $899, I would not have bought this Roomba. The Roomba 980 vacuums very well, but not as good as I do. The good thing is it vacuums more often than I do. As for cons the price is one, the app is too basic, Roomba does not hold a 2 hour charge. At best it can go 1 hour. Roomba also went under my couch and got stuck. I tried to use the laser blocks that came with it, but they did not stop it. Overall I do like the robot, but there are a lot of design flaws. If you can get the price down, like I did, then I say go for it. At $899, I would say no.

Previously to the 980, I had the 880. The 980 has a much better algorithm and is easier to operate. I had this unit for 5 days now. Two of the days have been successful in cleaning the house. The others have not been. The 2 days that were successful, was when I was at home. The other 3 had issues, where stuff got tangled in it, it thought it saw a cliff and it could not find its home base. I also noticed that when it vacuums, it tends to move the base so, then the thing cannot access the base.
I guess it was to assign a grade, it would be that 50-60% of the time, was successful the rest was not. A couple of instances, when it had issues, it would require me to intervene and then would tell me that the job was complete when it was not. The last 3 failures resulted in the house not getting completely vacuumed.
I was expecting much more for a $1000. To a certain extent, if I have to monitor it while being at home, it would be faster for me just to vacuum the house. Also, I have a 3000 square foot house. The downstairs took close to 8 hours to get done and the upstairs was about the same. I also tested the vacuum in Auto Carpet Boost mode after it was done vacuuming and my Dyson upright picked up way more from the carpet than the Roomba did. So, this is by no means a vacuum replacement but more of a supplement

Expensive But Works Great
Posted by: trouble from: on
I was on the fence for quite a while deciding whether or not to go forward with this purchase. Watching YouTube reviews and unboxings, reading reviews and related. I trusted the brand based off previous models, though the price tag is still up there compared to what you can get for the same amount of money, though not a vacuum 'bot'.
Over-all I'm 100% happy that I finally made the decision to spend the money and get the 980. It's worked better than expected on all flooring in my home from wood, tile, low pile and much higher pile carpeting.
That said; there are many other models out there by iRobot/Roomba that have come down in price quite a bit, as well as vacuum 'bots' made by other companies.
Because I've not owned any of them I can't give an honest or accurate comparison. I chose to stick with the market leader vs. saving a few bucks and not getting what I expected out of the product, though YMMV if you've previously owned another, whether by iRobot/Roomba or otherwise.
In the end, I'm complete satisfied with the purchase and would not hesitate to recommend or purchase one again in the future.

Poor Cleaning Capability for the Price!
Posted by: Texican55 from: on
We have bare concrete floors and two area rugs. We bought this product expecting it to clean dust and light weight surface objects from the bare concrete floors and area rugs. It does get the "dust bunny" along the walls but does not clean up dust, or even light weight objects from the bare floors or carpets. A lot of money for very little cleaning effectiveness.
