Solid build, elegant display, QUIET operation!
Posted by: TekToyJunkie from: Prior Lake, MN on
Rating is based on the unit being only one day old and I haven't yet 'tested' all of the neat features KitchenAid has promised in this Microwave/Convection oven combo unit.
I purchased this Over the Range (OTR) microwave as a replacement to a high-end Electrolux OTR.
I installed the unit myself and the installation was straightforward with clear instructions (note: I've installed many OTR's, if you haven't installed one before, I suggest having it done by a pro).
The digital display is super elegant - way cleaner text on the display than most appliances.
The killer thing about this microwave is how quiet it is. The door closes quietly (even when the kids 'slam' the door like kids can be known to do), the microwave cooking operation is SUPER quiet, and the exhaust fan (mine is set up to be vented internally) is significantly quieter than my old unit. This unit has a six speed fan, and on high it is about 50% quieter than the old unit on high.
The halogen cook-top lights are bright, centered both front-to-back and left-to-right which effectively illuminates the entire cook-top with no shadows like my old unit (it had the light very near to the front of the cook-top casting shadows to pots on the rear burners).
After installing I did the 'amount of time to boil a cup of water' and it performed fantastically - about two and a half minutes.
I am looking forward to testing out the Popcorn setting. I think I read somewhere before purchasing (maybe KitchenAid website?) that it monitors the popping sound to determine when the popcorn is done (amazing technology if that's actually the case - and exactly what the micro-popcorn package instructions tell you to do).
A few other features I'm looking forward to using are the convection oven (cooks like a regular oven, so one more oven with additional space for prepping holiday meals!) and the Steamer function (which will hopefully allow me to free up some cabinet space by replacing my stand-alone steamer).
Overall, this seems like a really solidly built unit, with quiet operation, and lots of nifty cooking solutions.

Great Microwave fantastic exhaust fan & convection
Posted by: StillSlippery from: on
This is a great combo convection microwave oven that has an exhaust fan that can't be beat. It is sturdy (our old LG literally fell apart after five years) that cost about the same and didn't even have the convection oven or an exhaust fan half as strong. The only complaint I have is its a little bigger than most (sticks out a bit, not a problem, and actually covers the stove better with the exhaust fan -- but did require me to enlarge the hole in the cabinets to install) and the exhaust fan on/off switch is not an on/off switch. It is a cycle thru fan settings 6,5,4,3,2,1,off button. Would be perfect if there was an on/of button and a speed setting button.
This microwave is great because like other high end units it has a sensor cook/reheat that actually monitors how the cooking is going. And better yet, this sensor actually works (not like the old LG version).
Convection oven works great especially if you are using your other ovens for a large meal and need to cook something else like bread or biscuits. It's large enough for a roast or even a turkey if you don't have an oven or don't have a double oven.

Does everything I hoped it would
Posted by: grammytammy from: on
I purchased this convection/microwave oven and paid to have Best Buy install it. It was money well spent and the procedure I was given was exactly as promised: I received a call the night before confirming my appointment and giving me a 4 hour window, the day of installation the technician called to let me know how long before he arrived and he arrived right on time. He was knowledgeable, efficient and polite.
Now for the appliance: first of all it looks beautiful, but that aside it performs exactly as promised and offers everything I was looking for. The interior is large enough to accommodate a 12" x 17" baking sheet with room to spare making it possible to cook for my whole family. On convection, it is quiet and bakes perfectly every time. My range oven takes forever to heat up and makes the kitchen so hot that I may never use it again as long as I have this great appliance.

Outstanding Performance and Design
Posted by: teaktoc from: on
It was with some hesitation that I spent as much as this microwave costs but my history with KitchenAid has been solid. (I have several other appliances and small appliances from KA.) This was my first KA microwave and, with my gas range, I needed a 400 CFM exhaust fan so this was distinctly ahead of the other brands/ offerings. The true bonus lies in the convection oven features. The programming is great with a manual option to allow for baking/ roasting anything that will fit as well as my KA gas range does without heating the entire kitchen. The ventilation is quiet and powerful unlike my past GE profile or LG over the range models. The microwave itself is very capable and powerful. I prefer my vegetables only barely steamed or cooked and the steamer sensor function results in a perfect product for cauliflower and broccoli. I have successfully experimented with steaming eggs and am confident that this can be perfected in time. I would recommend this to anyone in any situation. There is a bit more stainless around the face of the unit due to the door closure lipping-over the edge a bit which gives this a nice, overall clean look - not to mention the bright and wonderful stainless interior.

Overall good, but quirky menu options
Posted by: DanC from: on
The machine itself works quite well as both a convection oven as well as a microwave and has a quality build. It can definitely heat up leftovers quickly and also make toast. The main thing about it that annoys me are the menu options. For example, to turn the fan on there are SIX levels you must beep through to go from full on to full off. I'd prefer an old-fashioned knob. The hood light is similar On-NightLight-Off, so you have to hit the button twice to turn it off. The cooking menus should have a way of updating them to realistic food. When I want to cook something I have to beep, beep, beep my way to manual mode because I am not cooking biscuits or quiche yet have to scroll past these never-will-use options just to have proper control to cook dinner. The written users manual is all but entirely pointless. Good machine when I have control over it, but poor documentation and wizard controls.

Convection Feature in a Sleek Design
Posted by: onehotmini from: NJ on
Once our previous Electrolux convection microwave broke down, we began the hunt for a replacement. Having a microwave with the added convection cooking feature is essential when having a full second wall oven isn't an option. The KitchenAid brand has served us well in the past and this microwave has been no different. All the features you look for in a sleek modern design. The interior is spacious, the touch controls are responsive, and it cooks well.

Great product, convection option works great.

A great product and very quiet. We really appreciated the convection feature due to a faulty installation of our new double oven/gas range which took four weeks to be replaced. The microwave baked like a full size oven.

LOVE MY NEW MICROWAVE
Posted by: lolastar from: on
I HAD A KITCHENAID ARCHITECT SERIES MICROWAVE BEFORE THIS ONE THAT WAS 10 YEARS OLD AND IT STILL WORKED WELL BUT THE CASE WAS CRACKING. I DECIDED TO GET ANOTHER KITCHENMAID THINKING IT PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE AS GOOD AS MY OLD ONE.
IT IS EVEN BETTER!! IT IS QUIET, COOKS EVERYTHING PERFECTLY. HAS ALL THE RIGHT COOKING COMBINATIONS...TELL IT WHAT YOU ARE COOKING AND IT COOKS IT!!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

Great for baking
Posted by: TonyaM from: on
I bought this the week before Thanksgiving because I didn't have double ovens in my new home and had an army to feed. I wasn't sure that a microwave could really cook like an oven. It definitely can. I baked all of my sides in it and they came out great. I highly recommend this as an alternative to double ovens. It is extremely heavy for a microwave and I recommend professional installation. That's what we did.

microwave is awesome
Posted by: Terri from: on
I really like this microwave it has a lot of features my old one didnt have. When reheating pasta it is cooked through the evenly instead of the outside being hot and inside being cold. Also it defrost great without cooking the meat. The lights on the bottom provide ample light for cooking below. Installation could be a little bit challenging as my cabinets weren't configured for this and I had to build a new one. Overall this is a great microwave.
