Great laptop for my needs Posted by: Brettd from: on Quick summary: Great performing durable laptop with one of the best keyboards I have used on a laptop. The hardware on this machine has been great and build seems very solid. Any problems I have had with this machine seem to stem from the software but over the last month driver updates have been released that improve the stability and functionality. Overall I am very pleased with this laptop especially for the price it does everything I need it to do from light gaming, web browsing, and note taking. I would say for the price vs its features it’s a great value. Pro: • Great keyboard • Feels very sturdy and light • Speakers are good for the size of this laptop(very loud) • Pen and touch input works well • Runs cool and quiet when playing games and other tasks • Able to play all the games(diablo 3(maxed), star wars online(maxed), counter strike) • Battery life is great. I estimate around 5-6 hours of heavy use (maybe 2-4 hours while gaming) Cons: • Windows 10 is still in its infancy so bugs crop up • Some driver issues(some have been fixed in updates) • Not really a con but wished it had two ram slots • Not the fastest SSD but fast enough Now for the lengthy part: My last laptop was a 10 year old acer with a core 2 duo that worked perfectly well for what I was doing. I was waiting for it to die before I bought a new one but it just would not die. It was definitely time for an upgrade as some newer applications didn’t run very well. My list of requirements was touch screen, light and smaller than 15.6 inch, pen input for notes, convertible, decent keyboard, and great battery life(more than 3 hours) a bonus if it could play games. I have a powerful desktop that I use for games and CPU intensive tasks(movie encoding, and compiling). I wanted something that is semi powerful and travel with while not worrying about plugging into an outlet (my last laptop worked for 2 hours on battery). After sifting through reviews of tons of laptops and deciding if I wanted a convertible I narrowed it down to the HP Spectre. I loved the build quality, battery life, and the size but the heat and fan noise were deal breakers for me. When using this machine it would get hot enough that it would be uncomfortable to hold and the fan would get fairly loud. After I returned it I saw that Lenovo announced a new ThinkPad Yoga with dedicated graphics and pen input which they call the Yoga 460. I was presently surprised to see that best buy had a variant of this model named the yoga 14 and a couple hundred dollars cheaper than the Spectre. At first I wanted a laptop with a quad core i7 but non existed in the convertible form factor in my budget. I then settled to look for a laptop with a dual core i7 6500u. Currently this laptop is only offered with the i5 6200u and decided after some research though I found out that the i5 6200u on this is just as fast as the last gen i7 5500u that it wouldn’t be a big deal. Also having a dedicated 940m meant I could use it to play some older games that aren’t graphically intense and compared to intels HD520 got better performance. Pen input works very well and has pressure sensitivity in applications. I have big hands I don’t have a problem using the pen and feel like the experience is just like writing with a pencil (there are bigger pen options available if the small pen is a problem). It is also nice that the pen can be stored and no need to worry about the battery as it charges while docked. Some people have had negative comments about the touchpad. After the update and using it for a time I have had no trouble with the touchpad (I’m used to using a 10 year old touchpad so anything will be better). The keyboard on this is fantastic and a huge upgrade from what I had been typing on. I was also pleasantly surprised by the speakers. They sound way better than I was expecting and much better than the Spectre and my old laptop. This laptop meets and exceeded my needs and has been great to use. I definitely recommend this against other offerings and consider this a great alternative to the surface line when looking for a similar experience well saving some cash.

Amazing Student Computer Posted by: Thaler from: California on I actually picked this device up while in the market for a replacement to my Surface Pro 3 - and I'm glad I did. Compared to the Surface Pro 3/4, this is superior for those looking for a laptop that can be used to take notes, and a tablet as a secondary focus. (By comparison, Surface Pro 3/4 was more akin to a tablet that can serve as your laptop in a pinch) Pros of the Lenovo over Surface Pro 3/4: Price, sturdy hinge vs. kickstand, dedicated video card, stylus silo, larger screen. Pros of the Surface Pro 3/4 over the Lenovo: Lighter, support direct from Microsoft, more comfortable stylus, higher resolution, Windows 10 Professional, i5 in Surface Pro 4 is slightly faster. So, if you're looking for a workhorse laptop that can take notes and/or drawings when you need them, this Lenovo is great for the price. If weight/size is dictating your purchase, and you can pay extra, then go for the Surface Pro 3/4.

This Skylake version of the Thinkpad Yoga 14 series BestBuy carries, there are 4, is the one to get. I purchased the previous version and the resizing plus weight reduction is just enough to give it balance vs that bloated feel. The included SSD is a no brainer for picking over the older versions on clearance. I initially had issues with the ELAN touchpad but driver updates fixed this issue. If your having issues with the touchpad, uninstall the drivers and Windows 10 will download them again. Issue fixed. The Skylake processor is so new when this was released that updates are numerous and it keeps getting better. I installed Manga Studio 5.0, drawing software, and the included pen works perfectly. Very happy with this purchase. This appears to be an interim step in the yoga 14 before the Lenovo 460 is released. It may be a middle of the road 460 which is due out late 2015 / early 2016. The specs for the 460 are so close to the BestBuy Skylake yoga 14 I saw no reason to wait.

Very happy so far Posted by: penuser from: on The included pen is fairly good - it is definitely better than the pen on the Surface Pro 3, very close to the old Wacom EMR. You will notice some slight artifacts and jitter close to the edges, but overall I am very satisfied. I do think the included pen is too slim - it is not as comfortable to hold as the SP3 pen. Definitely order the big pen if you need to write a lot of stuff. I am a little disappointed with the screen though - the color is way off and looked washed away (just like my old T410), I haven't had enough time with it so I don't know if this can be calibrated somehow. Touchpad is not as good as old ThinkPads but still better than competition; I found myself using the track point a lot, like in the old days.

Amazing convertible ThinkPad with a digitizer Posted by: kirayamato26 from: on Let me start off with the bad news by saying that I had to go through 2 exchanges before I was able to get a perfectly functional unit, which has never happened to me before with any electronic device. The first unit was a Geek Squad certified open box, and the second unit was new. I have been an avid fan of ThinkPads for many years now, and this was actually my first time encountering one that wasn't perfectly functional out of the box after having owned 5 ThinkPads. Now for the good part of the review. Best Buy's customer service was amazing and exchanged the defective units hassle free. They also adjusted the prices to match the current on-sale price hassle free. I have never had such a great experience with customer service, so I will not let my bad luck with the first 2 units skew this review. Let's start with the things that the user would touch the most. The keyboard is amazing, like all ThinkPad keyboards that I've ever used. There are several manufacturers for the keyboard (as one can see from the parts list), one version has mushier arrow keys than the other one. I'm a touch typist so the backlight isn't a big deal to me, but yes, it's there, the keyboard is backlit. The TrackPoint works great. The trackpad is a hinge based one and only clicks on the bottom 75% or so easily, although this is subject to individual unit variance and some might click less easily on the upper spots than others. Lots of gestures (including middle button), so it's by far the best trackpad I've used on a Windows machine. The touch screen works well in my use, except the minor detail that it does fall asleep after a period of inactivity and takes an extra tap to re-activate. The pen works much better than the ones on older ThinkPad X series Tablets, but is a bit on the thin side. Speaking of the screen, there are 2 different suppliers: Samsung and BOE-Hydis. Throughout my units, I've seen both. The Samsung screen is the more common one, it is the brighter one of the two and shows a weird matrix that blurs the image on screen depending on the angle. The hypothesis is that it uses PenTile subpixels. The BOE-Hydis one behaves a lot more like a traditional IPS panel, and does not show distortion with viewing angle. In terms of colour, they are about equal with the BOE-Hydis one being warmer. The screen definitely isn't a top of the line IPS display, but it is a huge step up from the TN panels that they install in other laptops. The 1080p resolution is perfect for the size of the laptop. The CPU is fast enough for all my needs, and so is the 940M GPU. The only problem I have is that the GPU starts gradually throttling at 75 C, and the CPU starts throttling at 80 C, which makes it downclock when used at max load for extended periods of time (>15 minutes) running Linpack and Furmark. I haven't noticed a problem in actual use with benchmarking using Unigine Heaven or playing League of Legends, so it is just me nitpicking. The chassis near the vent does get really hot, though. The other aspects? Build quality is excellent, as one would expect from a ThinkPad. Speakers are OK, nothing to write home about, but they play sound and don't sound particularly bad. No low frequencies at all, though. Battery life is decent, around 7 ~ 8 hours usually of use for me. Yes, there are display driver issues on some units, but they are fixed with the latest driver update from Intel. Overall, despite my poor initial experiences, I will not hesitate to give this laptop a 5 star, even at its full asking price. This is an amazing product, and Best Buy has given me unmatched service. I have in fact recommended it to several friends already. I look forward to doing business with Best Buy again in the future.

Great Student Laptop Posted by: James from: on I had the Yoga 3 Pro and Surface Pro 3 before this, and I am much happier now with the Yoga ThinkPad. The Yoga 3 Pro pales in comparison. The ThinkPad, on the other hand, It is very well built, and has one of the best keyboards I have ever used in a laptop. The Pen is just as good, if not better than the surface pro 3. I have small hands so the small stylus does not bother me. The Display is gorgeous, and I do not find myself missing the higher res displays of the yoga 3 pro or sp3. This model also comes with the new skylake i5, which is much zippier than the core m chip on the yoga 3 pro. It also has a dedicated GPU that makes gaming a better experience then the other two laptops. Pros: Performance, Keyboard, Trackpad, Integrated Graphics, Stylus, Battery life, Display, SSD, Sturdy Build, not as much bloatware as yoga 3 pro Cons: Fingerprint magnet, Weight

Great 2 in 1! Posted by: gen10 from: Virginia Beach, VA on I had the Yoga 900 but had to return it due to too many issues with the display driver constantly crashing. I bought this one instead and glad I did. It's very fast and the Nvidia graphics display is a definite step up from the built-in Intel HD graphics video on most all other PCs out there (including the Yoga 900). It runs super quiet. I rarely hear the fan run at all even when the processor is being stressed. The bottom does not get very hot like other laptops. I find it easy to carry around. It does collect fingerprints and smudges well. The touch pad was a bit quirky in some applications when scrolling, especially in other web browsers like Firefox and Chrome. It would scroll super-fast and was uncontrollable. And I thought I was going to have to return this computer due to the glitchy touch pad. However, I just received a driver update to the Elan touchpad. Now scrolling is super smooth and silky. Touchpad size could be bigger but not that big of a concern in the end. I like the additional buttons and they have a very soft but deliberate feel when pressing them.. About the only downside so far is the weight. A lot of difference in weight between this and the Yoga 900 but I like the larger screen size this laptop offers. The Yoga 900 is a beautiful machine but I'm liking this one a lot better! Battery life seems about average. I don't think you ever get what manufacturers advertise. Overall, I've been completely satisfied. If you have not run the settings update lately, I highly recommend to get the latest drivers for the touchpad and Nividia graphics.

Budget Dream Machine? Sign Me Up! Posted by: zerossoul from: on I work in the Tech Department of a local High School and was recently sent on a quest to find the perfect Laptop for teachers. We came to 2 different laptops. This one (at $899) and the $1149 Spectre. After comparing the 2, this was the clear winner. (The spectre is still a slick machine, It's just pricey and lacks what this guy has) Every piece of this computer screams 'built like a tank'. It's VERY durable, including a retracting keyboard that recesses into the chassis whenever the computer folds into tent or tablet mode. The Stylus is very good. it recharges when placed into the pen holster (which is IN the chassis) and only takes about 30 seconds to get roughly 15 minutes of use, it stays charged for hours on end so charging is rarely a problem. There's no distance from the drawing surface, and boasts a high level of sensitivity (Its developed by Wacom). It has about 0.1 seconds of lag behind the stylus but VERY minor compared to many other art tablets. Only con here is the lack of Tilt detection. Did I mention this comes with a discrete 940M Graphics chip? Cause it does. It turns this into a VERY cheap gaming laptop. The RAM is also upgradeable to 16GB of RAM for those who want to pursue photo/video editing. All of this packed with a slick 2-in-1 design and a nice 6th gen i5 (you don't REALLY need that i7) makes the $899 price tag a steal, and it's not even on sale. ---Cons (all of which are minor)--- Lenovo has a history of installing spyware on their consumer laptops and this laptop DOES have spyware preinstalled. Going into the task schedule, you will find a task called 'Lenovo Customer Feedback Program 64' which is set to report to Lenovo daily. The good news is it is easily disabled, which lets me keep a 5-star rating on this laptop (honestly, it's much harder to disable all the information that windows gathers from EVERY windows machine, but I'm reviewing this laptop, not Windows). However, it's this kind of issue that prevents this brand from being purchased by government and military agency's. It's really Lenovo's loss. You could argue that Bloatware is a concern, but most of the software is specific to Lenovo and easily uninstalled if you would like a more barebones system. The only other beef I have with it is that the Stylus is holstered on the Left side instead of the Right, so most people (unless you're left-handed) will need to switch this to the other hand once you've pulled it out, or want to put it back in. Drawing can be interesting if you're used to drawing on paper, because the glass screen makes it feel like drawing on a whiteboard. The stylus kinda glides everywhere. If you're an artist, I recommend either a screen protector to give the screen some grit, or adding a felt tip to the stylus. ---- TL;DR ---- Buy this (why wouldn't you?), disable the spyware, and enjoy a smooth ride.

Great for artists and note-takers Posted by: John from: on There aren't a whole lot of options for someone who wants a "penenabled" laptop, which is why I was excited when I heard of this model. Your options are pretty much "get a big tablet with a keyboard", get a Surface Book, or this. Compared to the Surface Book, this doesn't have the higher res screen, battery life, or better aspect ratio- but it everything else is right up there with it, including- -Skylake processor -8gb ram(user upgradable to 16gb) -256gb SSD (you can put another one in with the m.2. drive) -Dedicated GPU The pen is a bit small, but otherwise I have no complaints about the drawing experience. It seems to be very accurate and the pressure sensitivity curve seems about right. A similar setup for a Surface Book would cost almost twice as much. This laptop may not be the best of it's kind, but it is the best of it's price range.

Awesome Laptop Posted by: donfink from: Florida on I just wrote a rather extensive review about this machine, but it turns out that I was just adding a comment to someone else's review. Guess I need to pay attention. Here's a brief review: I bought this machine two days ago more or less under duress. My old laptop died a horrible death and I am getting ready to take a trip. There was no time to get the old machine fixed. I walked into Best Buy thinking that I wanted to downsize to a 13 inch display (from my old 15 inch display), but they were too small. I settled on a 14 inch display and started comparing all of them in the store. This computer was clearly the best looking of all the displays. Several computers had identical specs, but this one actually looked better for some reason. Then, I started weeding out machines by looking for just the ones with solid state drives. This one has a 256GB SSD. I use a 256GB SSD on my desktop and have been successful at managing the small size, so I wasn't worried. Finally, I started comparing the heat output of the various machines simply by feeling the bottom sides for excessive heat. None of the machines in the store seemed significantly hotter than any others, so I didn't learn much from that. After comparing displays, processors, and the presence of an SSD, I finally had to go with - as I told my friends before I went to the store - the "pretty" one. This one had the best looking display. I spent yesterday getting the computer ready for the trip. I installed Photoshop, Lightroom, Corel Video Studio, and an open source word processor and spreadsheet.. And some odds and ends for remoting into my server and so on. In the end, I had around 160GB free on the SSD. Not bad.. There was very little bloatware. Most of the stuff I took off was simply because I had other software I preferred. The battery seems to be pretty good. I didn't pay close attention, but I used it for several hours and took it down to 50%. If there's a problem later I'll post a follow-up. The performance seems to be quite good. Keep in mind that I'm talking about a laptop, not a desktop, so performance expectations should be realistic. I'm not a gamer, but Photoshop, Lightroom, and Video Studio can be pretty demanding so I'll know more after this trip. My gut tells me that performance will not be an issue. So, again, I'll post a follow-up if this turns out to be a problem. Heat will not be an issue with this computer. It did get slightly warm, but that's as far as it went after quite a bit of work yesterday. It came with a stylus. I don't think it's going to be anything spectacular, but I don't plan to use it in that way. Also, keep in mind that I'm used to a high end Wacom tablet, so my expectations of what I should be able to do with a stylus are very high. Considering that I bought this machine under duress with no time to properly research the options, and factoring in that I won't be using it as a tablet as a general rule, I am very, very pleased with the purchase.
