Camera works well, however, had I known you have to pay a monthly fee to record video, I would have never bought it. $120.00 dollars extra per year just to record video is ridiculous. There are better systems that allow you to record to your hard drive. Wish I new it on the front end. I do not recommend this camera system unless you have money to spare for an annual subscription.

I want everyone contemplating this camera to know that if you don't subscribe to Nest Aware, you will only get notifications with poor resolution still images (think flip phone camera quality) with the motion detection feature. You will NOT be able to review a high resolution video clip. Just a still photo delivered via text or email. This despite the super high resolution of the video. The subscriptions range from $100/yr to $200/yr. It is absolutely outrageous that with a $200 camera I can't choose to store the videos on my iCloud account or Google Drive.
Essentially, unless you 1) subcribe or 2) watch the live video feed at all times, you are purchasing a $200 still photo camera that takes pictures with early 1990s resolution.
Otherwise, the camera is easy to set up and the user interface is pretty friendly. The camera does have a very nice wide angle view and it is a nice crisp clear picture when viewing the live stream (or when viewing recorded clips IF you have a subscription).

I was researching security cameras to keep an eye on my newly adopted dog during the day. After all the positive reviews on the Dropcam, I was excited when they announced the release of the Nest Cam. I waited until it came out to have the latest and greatest version and have been completely disappointed. I plugged in the camera, followed the directions and added it to my nest app which already has my thermostat etc. It worked for about 3-5 minutes, I then heard an audible click from the camera and it went offline. The only way to get it back online was to unplug it and plug it back on and then re-add it to the app from scratch. This happened 3 times back to back so I called Nest support. Nest support informed me that I had acquired the product earlier than its release somehow, I bought this from Best Buy and picked it up in store mind you, and I needed to try to add it again in two days after the official release. I followed their instructions, re did everything two day later, same issues so I called in. I was told my issue had been escalated to two different departments and I would receive an answer on Monday via a telephone call. Monday came and went, Tuesday came and went and then Wednesday I gave up and returned it. I exchanged it for a Samsung Security Cam and am going to set it up shortly. Hopefully the Samsung works better than the Nest Cam. I wouldn't recommend this product after my experience.

Easy installation and 1080 is clear, but does not get the job done in the recordings. I read all the great reviews so thought I was buying a reliable camera. I purchased 3 and didn't mind the high price tag given that I thought I was getting a great product. Unfortunately for me, this product failed. I wanted to be able to see all movement of a person in any given room, but this only records for a few seconds at a time when there is motion, even if the person is still in the room moving around, it will stop recording. Then it starts recording again after a minute or two, consequently causing you to miss a lot of footage! This happened with all 3 cameras, so it wasn't just one defective one. The app also buffers a lot so its impossible to see live footage from your phone. You have to rely on playback (recordings), but like I said the recordings are not reliable.

Close, but still needs work

Impressive build quality and design, I love the mounting and flexibility. But then what is up with the cable? It is like a huge afterthought, it is unnecessarily thick (it should need only 3 wires max) it is not flexible and makes mounting cleanly impossible.
For it to be of any use you need to pay the subscription, and it is a PER CAMERA subscription, which can get expensive fast.
The mobile app has very limited functionality when it comes to history or alerts. I have yet to get an alert take me to the correct clip. Even viewing the clips on mobile is random at best.
The alert "zones" are limited as they only work for particular situations. I.E. if you have a window as a zone, yet if someone walks in front, even many feet from the window, it will trigger. In the docs, web and video it leads you to believe it is smarter. It is not.
Did I mention this camera gets VERY hot?
The image quality is good, as is the night vision, but of course this is only if your network bandwidth is good. Also note that this camera is using your precious internet upload bandwidth all the time the camera is on. No local buffering here. I would like to see it just send video if motion or sound was triggered.
Think if you have 10 of these. Hello Comcast throttling...
I think it still needs a lot of work.
Did I mention the huge afterthought of a cable? They don't use it for configuring, so they don't need a full USB cable, just a nice thin and flexible cable for power would be much better. Perhaps in black to match the rest of the camera.

Great device, lousy recording scheme

Camera worked great, but unit looks utilitarian. Does not blend in well with home environment. Main issue is the packaging is not at all clear that you must submit to their $10 minimum a month tariff in order to actual record any video and actually have a record of any event. So there's a minimum recurring cost of $120 dollars a year (for it to be of any actual use to you). If CLEARLY explained before purcase, then that's just a consumer's decision, it was not.

Hardware Improved, Software Missing Features

This is review is in relation to the Dropcam Pro.
The video quality is a step up. This is a given with 1080p now featured. Night mode is also better. However, this camera, like the Dropcam Pro, continue to have issues with dusk time lighting when its too dark for natural lighting, and not dark enough for the infrared lights.
I have not tested the sound quality but the new Nest app (tested w/ Android) has a talk and listen chime feature.
The mounting system is also much improved with the magnetic base. My toddler daughter also is less intimidated by its sleeker physique.
While the hardware is improved, the software is lacking (Nest vs Dropcam Android apps and web apps). There are 2 key features missing. First the Nest app and web app is missing the feature to share the camera feed via email. You can only make the camera public. The second missing feature is the ability to set location aware notifications.
As these missing features are software, I'm hopeful that Nest will re-integrate them into the applications. However, leaving them off seems to indicate a rush to push the product out before the software is finalized. Unfortunately, while the Dropcam app still works with the Dropcam Pro, it will not work with the new Nest Cam.

At first glance, the Nest Cam is a really great product. However, for those that are more tech inclined or with needs such as outdoor mounting, the Nest Cam falls short.
+: Great for those with simple recording or technical requirements.
+: The Nest Cam integrates tightly with the Nest app on the iOS/Android platforms and Nest.com website.
+: Setup is extremely easy.
-: Wireless range and performance isn't great Despite a line of sight to my 802.11AC Apple Airport Extreme router, it often has buffering issues.
-: Fully relies on the Nest Cam cloud video recording system to be operational. The highly touted capabilities that require a monthly Nest Aware subscription where motion detection sends alerts to your mobile device, etc. have been down for a subset (myself included) of active Nest Cam users on the Nest Community forums since 7/10/2015 with no notice from Nest.
-: Nest's Phone Technical Support is extremely lackluster. Estimated hold time was 30 minutes, my call was disconnected by their phone system at a hold time of 1 hour and 2 minutes.
-: Nest's E-mail support is also poor, they tell you to expect a 3-5 day turnaround time before you receive a response.
I am now currently trying to engage Nest's support via twitter and other venues. I want a refund, I'll roll my own security camera system.

Great as a baby monitor

Works very well as a baby monitor. My iPhone will notify me if there is noise or motion in my son's room and we can check on him any time. Be careful with "Nest Aware." We cancelled our free trial because it uploads video history to a server and slowed our internet to a crawl. Without it, there is no history but the connection is instant and the rest of the house is not affected.
