WILL NOT WORK FOR CENTURY LINK W/ ADSL2+
Posted by: CurtisMatthews from: on
So after reading a lot of the reviews concerning century link I decided to make the purchase because some people said they got it to work. Well after two days of trying and calling century link and netgear separately I finally got fed up with the back and forth finger pointing of who's fault it is. So i call both Century Link and Netgear and got them both on a conference call so all three of us could figure it out together.
After about 20 mins of going over my internet service from Century Link and what the Netgear DM200 can do, the end result was that since i only had DSL and not DSL & telephone from Century link that the signal that Century Link was providing was only the ADSL2 signal and not the VDSL. Yes i know that the box says it does VDSL/ADSL2+ and the box also says it works for Century Link **IT DOES NOT!!!**
The DM200 can NOT process the ADSL2 from Century Link. It was told to me by the Netgear rep that the modem says it can only do VDSL and ADSL2+ by only certain providers and that the current Century Link signal i was getting was not compatible. The rep from Century Link also told me that i was his 4th call concerning that same thing with the same modem in the past two weeks and he recommended to get another modem.
The Netgear rep then told me that the best model they have for the ADSL2 signal is the Netgear DM111PSPv2. The Century Link rep also confirmed that the new modem that the Netgear rep suggested is compatible.
AND BONUS!!!! The Netgear DM111PSPv2 is $10 cheaper $$$$$$$$

I needed to replace an old 2-wire gateway modem(~12 years old) that was originally provided to me from AT&T due to intermittent connection issues.
I decided to get this Netgear - Vdsl/adsl Broadband Dsl Modem as a direct replacement, thinking it would be plug and play, more or less.
I started the provided "Genie" program to install the modem and found that it kept stalling out. I had to restart the installation process repeatedly getting further each time, but still not completing the installation. This caused a great deal of frustration, not knowing why it wouldn't complete. I couldn't figure out why it kept bombing out, but eventually it finished installing.
To this day I do not know why it was so difficult. I would recommend NETGEAR review the installation process for this device and see if they can get it to work more smoothly, thereby avoiding any unnecessary returns of their product.

Works much faster than previous modem
Posted by: Andy from: on
I had a modem from my Internet service provider (CenturyLink) before, and it crashed so I bought this netgear modem. My wireless connection is far more stable than it ever was with my previous modem, and netgear has great service, making set up very easy

Very difficult installation
Posted by: Sparky1 from: on
Tried to hook up by myself before calling tech support. It took a couple phone calls to both centurylink and netgear to try to get this working. Spent well over an hour with netgear tech in India to no avail. Tried myself again before taking product back for replacement. Finally after another 1.5 hours of trying I finally got it to work. I think the key was to keep trying the auto setup wizard. When it looked like it was trying to detect the settings it stated it would take 1-6 minutes. Tech support only had me wait 2-3 minutes till we tried something else. I think it took more like 20-30 minutes but it did detect the settings and let the setup finish. Seems to be an ok product but if I knew it would be this much trouble I never would have bought. Lost 4-5 hours out of my day.

Decent - Not Sure any Improvement

I purchased this modem to replace a 3+ year old Actiontec modem that i was leasing from CenturyLink. Luckily I still had the Actiontec or I would have never gotten the Netgear modem connected. The automated set up simply would not work, and could not determine the proper settings for the CenturyLink network.
I had to reconnect the ActionTec, and write down all of the settings, then manually compare to the automated configuration settions on the Netgear.
Came down to the "connection mode" (it needed to be PTM-TaggedA), I have no idea what that even means, but once I set it to that I was up and running.
I have not noticed a real change in performance, which is fine as there was no issue with the old modem. Still have a consistent 45+Mb/s, however I have had connection issues with the extender.
Also recommend not updating the firmware, as it caused me to lose all internet connectivity - could connect to the modem, it was just not establishing an internet connection. Reverted back to initial firmware and all is good.
Overall the modem works, and provides a reliable connection but you will have to spend time getting it set up (at least if you have CenturyLink in the Phoenix area), honestly I should of just kept the Actiontec.

Great improvement over the supplied WIFI
Posted by: Skimedic from: on
My kids are at the age where all of their friends are bring devices. The guest access is a very nice feature that I had been missing for a long time.
The signal is reliable - I was having interruptions with the supplied wifi device from my ISP when running very long processes (I develop software and data warehouses). They went away once I installed this device.
