Awesome replacement router
Posted by: BxSarge from: Bronx, NY on
I am not one to EVER write a review, but seeing as how I read most of the reviews on this model before my purchase...my 2 cents might help someone else out. This router was purchased to replace my D-Link which died on me...and what an improvement it was! Super easy and quick installation (not sure what happened with others who purchased this unit). The network was setup and I was able to connect 2 laptops (one of which has Windows 7) in under 5 minutes. I've only been up and running for about a week, but so far there have been no issues at all. Before writing this review I connected my Blu-Ray player to the network so I can stream Netflix, I think the signal strength is much better. Also the WPS feature on it is GREAT!!! Saves you a lot of time from typing in uber long network passwords on your xbox 360 controller or Blu-Ray remote.
The only thing negative I have to say is that I wish this was my first router. Hope this helps someone as it is my first ever review.

It does not work with 2010 or later equipement
Posted by: AndyinPasadena from: Pasadena, CA on
When I called tech support they told me that it is a system issue with all of the items I own (2 new laptops, blackberry, iPod Touch, wireless printer). It is not their fault and that they are well aware of the issues and know how to fix it.
Ok. for the tech support, I purchased their plan. What a joke!!
I was one hold for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Then hung up on and put on hold again. "I will wait until a tech speaks to you." 30 minutes later I hung up. I have a timer on the phone, so I can unfortunately see how long it has been.
I had checked out Netgear on Consumer Reports and they are rated well. But this is for their higher valued items. I guess the under $60 crowd is just bad stuff.
I should have read reviews on here first and gotten a better understanding of what I was getting into.

wont handle 200Mb speeds from ISP
Posted by: reybeast from: on
so this unit is a 300Mb router, but if you have 150Mbs or higher coming into it, it cant handle that speed. I have 200 at the house, and when I use this router, I get 100 when wired and only 50 on wireless. I called Netgear and that they said that was how the unit worked. I tried a factory reset on it as well. I went and bought a TPlink AC1900 and my speeds are 200 on wired or wireless. I am guessing that if you have lower internet speed coming into your house, like 50Mb, it would be ok, but not sure. I screwed myself by forgetting to return this unit within the 30 days, now I get to keep a 45 dollar unit that I cant convert to a range extender.

failed in 6 months ,netgear will not support
Posted by: LinksysmademeGrummpy from: Fowler in on
This router is nothing special but not much money,6 months and it quit working. I choose it because of the Lifetime Warranty, who would put a lifetime Warranty on something that was junk. Now I know, all test on my router come back as it does not see the Ethernet cable, but I can plug the same cable into my laptop and it works fine. It is a hardware issue.Phone support says $70 to talk to me because it is over 90 days go to online it is free . On line says it is over 90 days, So the trick is always say it is software and demand twice as much money as the router sells for to support it. I cant pay $70 to get a RMA# for a $39 router. I have run all the test and so has my ISP, and a lot of other reviews agree it is hardware and that is lifetime warranty which is 90 days at net gear. I did not know what kind of company they were when I bought this so I warn you do not count on any support or warranty. I wasted 12 hours of my life trying to get this Net gear product to work.

Installing the Netgear software was easy, but not connecting to the laptop. I found the on-line instructions confusing. The fellow at the Best Buy where I bought this router offered to take care of this for me for an additional $140 by having the Geek Squad come out and set it up, but I refused. After all, I only paid $59 for the router, and I am fairly computer-literate and don't have many problems installing things. So I finally returned it and bought a Belkin, which was easy to install, easy to set up the security and easy to use with my laptop. I did have to call tech. support at Belkin to get information, and the girl was very kind, patient and helpful. At the end of the conversation, I was good to go.
One of the problems with any installation is having to go on-line to read the user manual. None of these come with a printed manual that you can easily look over and find your problem. Trying to find things on the on-line manual is much less convenient.

Solid router for not too much $$
Posted by: jwebb from: Visalia CA on
This replaced an aging Belkin Wireless-g I had for several years. The Netgear was an easy setup for anyone semi-versed in such a thing & the enclosed CD will help w/ the less tech savvy.
Swapped into the home network easily. Can now run a Mac mini via AirPort and get a fast, solid Wireless N connection. Overall, internet is generally faster/more responsive over WiFi on the Mac now than it was wired when in conjunction w/ the old Belkin. Also a more solid WiFi connection to a Wii & iPod Touch - and noticeable improvement in the wired broadband connections to the DirecTv DVR & Panasonic BluRay player.
WiFi signal extends out into both front & back yards - can surf the web on the iPod or laptop while chilling in the back yard - nice. Range on this is very good - certainly enough for the avg 2-4 bedroom 1 story home.
In other words - this worked out great. Recommend for just about any home network.

My goal was to purchase a reasonably priced router. My requirements were simple. When I got to the store there were a couple of routers in a similar price range. According to the specifications I knew each would meet my needs. A salesman suggested the Netgear because of its easy installation interface. I have set up many routers and I have to agree – installation was a breeze! The router is performing well – no complaints.

Inept Tech Support
Posted by: Atari from: Florida on
Had problems with the installation of this router.
A call to Tech Support provided no answers to my problem, was on the phone for a very long time listening to broken english answers that made no sense (scripted answers). I finally gave up and told the non support man to just forget it, I would just return this item.
Router was returned and switched for a Linksys E2000 which worked right away.
Way to go Netgear, keep sending Tech Support to India.

Great budget router
Posted by: JCeeD from: Southern California on
I bought this router to replace an old Netgear WNR1000 router that I had been using for several years. It started to keep on dropping our wifi signal, whereby I would have to keep on resetting the router to get the wifi signal back. Right off the bat, the wired speed more than doubled from average max 40 Mbps to 80 Mbps. Max wifi speeds remain about the same at 30. So far so good, I have not had any wifi signal drop.
The router itself has a nice sleek form factor and small footprint. You can connect up to 4 devices to it by ethernet cable asides from the wifi. It was so easy and quick to install. It was just a matter of switching out the wires from the old router, logging on to router.net, and setting up the ID and password for the wireless network. Our second wired computer was online just after powering on. The price was right at $40. I am pleased with my purchase and will most definitely stick with Netgear in the future.
