Not ready for prime time!

Posted by: ActionJackson from on 03/17/2016I really wanted to love this printer, I was an early bird contributer on Indiegogo and waited a long time for this printer! BUT THERE IS SOMETHING ALWAYS GOING ON WITH THIS PRINTER! ALWAYS A PROBLEM! Either parts won't stick, or the hot end will dig into the plate or the wifi will disconnect out of nowhere or the object you are printing will jump when your print 70% done. Tech support is great but how many hours can you stay on the phone and how many times do you have to call until this printer is working right? As you can tell from this review that I am at my wits end with this printer I've only had about 3 successful prints out of 20. Maybe once they work out the kinks but just not ready yet!

excellent 3D printer for home

Posted by: rachelt from on 03/17/2016I have had my MOD-t for about 1 month and I love it more and more each day. The MOD-t is sleek, reliable, and very easy to use. Everything New Matter does is smart and user friendly. There is a lot of information on their site and helpful videos on youtube for how to utilize all its features. I was new to 3D printing before getting this, and a skeptic, but I am now an enthusiast! The new matter store has lots of great designs to print for free and printing your own design with the MOD-t is very easy. I highly recommend this product.

Good value

Posted by: Alan from on 03/17/2016I transitioned from a Solidoodle to a Mod-t and have been very happy. If you're familiar with the Solidoodle then you know what I mean when I say I have probably added years back to my life with the Mod-t and its ability to simply get the job done. Yes there can be a few bumps along the way but they are related to the nature of 3D printing and the product seems to be designed to account for pretty much any of those. If you are a hobbyist or just looking for a good value sub 1k printer you'll be very hard pressed to find a better deal. If you have kids, or want this for a young adult, there is no better deal. From the ability to watch from any angle through to the unique build tray the printing experience is brilliant. The online printable object library and the ability to watch your progress remotely is icing on the cake.

Easiest 3D printer to use

Posted by: Robster from on 03/17/2016I've worked with 3D Printers for years. This is by far the easiest 3D printer to use straight out of the box. The instructions and guidance started right from the moment I opened the box with very easy instructions for unboxing and setting up the printer. The website control makes using the print so easy. I can't believe it but I use my smartphone to set up the machine and start prints. It's all wireless and pretty amazing! Their support with many explanation videos online were very helpful too. Print quality is good for the price.

Excellent starter printer

Posted by: BrainBrian from on 01/06/2016I bought the MOD-t not knowing anything about 3D printers or how they work. I have to say this has been a most enjoyable experience. The setup was simple and I was printing the test print within 30 minutes (if that)! I've since printed several things from their online store and some of my own designs. Only one of those prints failed and it was because I didn't prepare the print bed as I should have(the print shifted). Any questions or issues I had were discussed and solved in their technical service forum. There are unlimited possibilities with this printer. I just wish it could print larger items. I printed a dice tower (pictured) and it took ~12 hours to print the 3 pieces. Maybe when I have more experience I can move up but for now this is a perfect starter 3D printer.

Great Product, on it's way to being the best

Posted by: Thomas from on 12/09/2015I am also a indiegogo supporter of this product. My experience has been quite different from that of the previous reviewer. The product itself is a beautiful piece of work. It is definitely something to show off once you have it setup, not something you'll want to hide in the basement as you would most other 3D printers. The cover keeps the sound from being a nuisance, which is brilliantly simple. As you can see in the pictures this printer is simple looking and pretty. Once you have setup the wifi and updated the firmware you only need a power line run to it . Sending a print to the printer is simple through the web interface and gives a nice 3D preview as well as some dimensional manipulation if desired. The print quality is great and they continue to improve it with regular updates. I have run into the instance where a print stops before completing, and while this is frustrating it also isn't that unusual in the world of 3D printing. In fact it is one of the more graceful failures I am aware of, the extruder cools and the printer stops. No risk of fire or huge pile of filament. New Matter has acknowledged this bug and is preparing an update to squash it according to their staff on the forums. Overall, I am very happy with this product and I am excited to see how much further they can push it with their brilliant team.

Awesome tool/toy, software needs some work

Posted by: shmalba from on 12/09/2015I also got my MOD-t as part of a crowdfunding campaign and have had very few issues with it thus far. The setup of the printer is fairly straightforward and not too complicated. Within 30 minutes of opening the box I had already printed the test piece, and was starting to print my own design. The printer itself is beautiful, and is a decent size -- so you can put it on a small table, but still are able to print medium sized items. Watching it print is absolutely mesmerizing. The online design software is pretty basic, if you have used any sort of design/cad program before it is really easy to use. If you haven't been exposed to that type of software it might take you a little time to get up to speed. I love that you can check the progress of your print online, and the estimate is pretty accurate (tells you % of print, not time). Note that it does take TIME to print things -- small prints may take up to an hour (depending on detail) and larger items will certainly take a few hours. It does seem like they have a few software issues, where the printer will stop in the middle of a print, which can be frustrating. I was able to modify my design, and even get it to print in pieces and then just glue them together to complete my item. While that was annoying, it made me realize that I can print much larger items by piecing them. I know that they just recently released the product, and I'm hoping that they are able to update their firmware as they get more info from users, to make better software. The cleanup between prints (or partial prints) is really easy, thanks to the tools they provide. This 3D printer makes 3D printing pretty easy-- however you have to be realistic. Designing and printing a project takes time and effort. You WILL run into issues with printing some of your designs, you will probably need to redesign some things, and I'm sure that New Matter will certainly have to continuously be updating their firmware to make it better. Nonetheless I'm excited to print out my Christmas presents this year!

Questionable Concept..Not Ready for Retail Release

Posted by: TwoDimes from Vienna, VA on 11/29/2015I got my MOD-t as part of a crowd funding campaign. The MOD-t concept is for a 3D printer "appliance" that looks nice sitting on the shelf, needs no wiring (since it is connected to WiFi), and is essentially care-free -- like a blender or clock radio. It might look nice sitting on your coffee table (?) or bookshelf, but you still need access to the back where the filament spool is mounted. That mounting requires the filament to make a 90-degree bend to get into the printer and I had a couple of breaks -- the printer mindlessly went through movements with no filament. I was able to print an adapter that is supposed to make the supplied 0.5 kilo spool sit better on the MOD-t’s spool holder (designed for wider 1.0 kilo spools) but that increased the friction and I had a filament break almost immediately. The solution was to zip-tie a ½” wood dowel horizontally to the legs of a stool placed behind the printer. The filament now spools in a straight line directly into the MOD-t’s feed hole. (You can also buy spool holders online.) A spool holder will be required if you use some of the high-rated, non-New Matter PLA filament -- the New Matter spool’s hub inner diameter is about 50mm and some other filament spool hubs have a ~30mm hub ID. You could read the MOD-t’s description and come away with the impression that you only need a WiFi connection to operate the printer. Not true. You also need a USB connection to update firmware, establish the WiFi connection, etc. As a practical matter, I left my laptop connected to the MOD-t by USB all the time. The last time it stopped printing in the middle of a job (hours into it and still only 54% complete) I had to reestablish the WiFi connection with the New Matter desktop app using the USB cable. Since the USB connection is required for so much functionality, I find it very odd that you cannot use the USB connection to actually print from the New Matter Store. Why would you want to use WiFi if a perfectly good USB connection is already available -- and required for some tasks? (My WiFi is located 19 feet away -- by laser rangefinder --in a direct line through an open doorway, so there should be no signal strength issues.) The software is incomplete and inadequate to the task. Even if it were not the default consumer setting, there is no dashboard to tell at a glance the status of the printer and the work being printed. The web application you use printing from the New Matter Store displays minimal information on the current job most of the time, but I found I needed to refresh the screen manually. Once it decides it is done with a task, it is likely to refresh no more. The desktop application is also limited in function and offers even less information. You really need both running to operate the printer. I was never able to make a complete correct print of a large object (look for the Ducky or Hippo in the New Matter catalog). You can see the results of two tries in the attached photos. The last straw is that my MOD-t no longer “unloads” the filament. I have to shut down the printer, let it cool, take off the hot end, and tug the filament from either above or below, snapping it off inside the extruder. Then clean things up a bit, reinstall the hot end, and load the filament. The CEO of another 3D printer company says the following in a video on the company site: “If you’ve never bought a 3D printer, I want to introduce our line of printers to you and tell you one thing that I really want you to walk away from this video with: 3D printing is hard. … It’s just not click-and-print -- yet. We’re going to get there someday.” I don’t think the MOD-t reaches that “someday”. As an accidental Beta tester (in no way can the printers, firmware, support, and web interface be considered retail-ready) I figure that New Matter is a good 3 to 6 months away from having a finished product. Even then, I am doubtful that they will be able to deliver on their click-and-print vision. Meanwhile, my MOD-t is boxed up (save ALL the packing) waiting an RMA.
