Very good lens

I have tried the 105mm VR macro before getting this. Even though this may not get you as much a 105mm would, this is still an excellent lens comparing the extra dollars you be saving with this. I have compared the macro capabilities in low light and was impressed with its abilities. I would recommend using this on a FX camera as it would serve you as a all-round lens.

Good macro lens takes crisp pictures. Hard to get use to the focus aspect and there is no auto focus

Great for closeup shots

This lens is great for closeup shots. Make sure you verify the compatibility for your camera. Although this lens fits the Nikon D5300 it does not auto focus due to the lack of focus motors on the lens. You will have to manually focus the lens.
