Great Lens but a bit pricey for beginners Posted by: from: Atlanta, GA on I'm am a DSLR beginner. Just bought my first DSLR and always want to get the shot of the blurry background. I bought the Nikon D3200 with the starter lens kit (18-55mm 3.5/5.6) ... didn't get the blurry background. So I read around the internet and learned that I need a lens that could do F 2.8 to achieve the effect I want. Looked around and found this lens 50mm prime 1.4. It was beyond my budget. I intended to spend about under $200 for my "test" lens ... which I can get the 35mm 1.8 for about $220. But this 50mm was on sale at Bestbuy so ... I read some good reviews about it and gave it a try. And it is a great lens. My first shot out of the box, I tried the maximum aperture 1.4 and the background was so blurred out and I was happy with it. It is still pricey for me but it comes with 5 years warranty from Nikon. So I decide to keep it and it is my primary and only lens now. It's fast auto focus ... great color ... good lens.

Excellent low light lens! Posted by: from: on The Nikon 50mm 1.4g lens is an excellent choice for any SLR user. It is a little heavier than the Nikon 50mm 1.8g, but the weight is balanced by it's exceptional light gathering capabilities. You can shoot without a flash indoors even at night. The 1.4 aperture also provides excellent depth of field control with awesome bokeh effects. The price is great for a lens of this quality and features. Metal mount, rear seal gasket, and internal silent wave motor focusing system are a few of the premium features you'll appreciate with this lens. A little more expensive than the excellent Nikon 50mm 1.8g, the 50mm 1.4g offers excellent value for long term ownership. Every SLR owner should have a 50mm lens and this is an excellent choice! Once you use the 50mm, you'll find it will be your go to lens for any shooting situation. I use mine 90% of the time...

awesome lens Posted by: from: texas on I purchased this lens to go with a new Nikon D7100. It is an amazing lens. I shoot pictures of the family and we're just getting amazing shots of our young children who NEVER stand still for the shot.

Good Lens Posted by: from: on I bought this lens to go along with my D610 and I'm wondering if I would've been better off with the Sigma alternative. This is a great lens - the bokeh is absolutely dreamy and the color quality is great - my only concern is with the sharpness. My pictures seem to come out a little too soft sometimes, no matter the camera settings. Plus the "auto" part of the autofocus feature doesnt focus very well if its something further away than the 50mm distance. I usually have to switch into manual focus to get the shot. Overall, I am happy with this lens which is why I gave it 4 stars, but I do wish I had rented both this and the Sigma to compare before purchasing. Just a thought for those of you considering this lens.

Very sharp but a little slow to focus Posted by: from: Long Island Ny on Here is what I like about the Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens: It is short and light to carry. It looks great on my D7000. The manual focusing ring is smooth and the long travel allows for very easy, fine focusing adjustments. The Auto/Manual focus switch works well. This lens is as sharp as anything else I have ever owned. (but not at f1.4) Here is what I am not so happy with: The lens is the slowest to achieve auto focus I have ever owned. Images taken at f1.4 look like I had some kind of medium strength “soft focus” filter on the lens.

Perfect lowlight and portrait companion Posted by: from: New York, NY on Excellent lens for portraits and low light. the 1.4 nails it. This is a good lens on my D7100. I had the 1.8 and needed a 1.4 for even better low light situations.
