Choosing a Corded Telephone

By Staff Writer

Cordless and cellular phones may be the darlings of the telecommunications world, but corded phones are forever. You can do pretty impressive things when you've had more than 120 years to perfect a technology.

There are many advantages to a standard corded telephone over a cordless model, such as:
  • No battery will run down during a conversation.
  • Neighbors can't monitor your call, accidentally or intentionally.
  • Corded phones weigh and cost less, and have better sound quality and ergonomics.
  • You can buy a workhorse everyday phone for a fraction of even an entry-level cordless phone's cost.
There was a flurry of changes in corded phones following the 1984 breakup of the Bell System as new manufacturers flooded the category with feature-laden (and often less durable) products. In the last few years, major changes in technology have given way to minor improvements in convenience, many arriving in the form of new services from local phone companies.

In general, you'll want to keep these key questions in mind when shopping for a corded phone:
1. How comfortable is the receiver?
2. Will the phone and receiver stay in place?
3. How long is the cord? Is it the right color?
4. What do the keypad buttons look like?
5. Is the ringer adjustable?
6. What basic features does the phone offer?

1. How comfortable is the receiver?
Home-office users are learning what telco operators have known for decades: Only a fool would risk damage to neck and spine by cradling a phone's receiver between ear and shoulder. But you will cradle the phone in this uncomfortable manner — you're only human. If you don't intend to buy a shoulder rest, you can audition a phone by cradling its receiver between ear and shoulder to test not only the comfort level but also whether it will remain comfortably lodged without much shoulder hunching. You should also determine whether the receiver will be comfortable in your hand and beside your ear for a long conversation.

2. Will the phone and receiver stay in place?
Pick a model that will stay firmly seated in the cradle when it's not in use. Many of the fussier designs are less reliable this way, resulting in unfortunate hours off the hook. This is especially important if you plan to wall mount the phone. A handset that sits firmly in its cradle horizontally may not hang so well vertically. Check the handset to see if there is a small notch under the ear piece and a corresponding catch on the cradle to keep the receiver secure when the phone is wall-mounted.

Almost all corded phones can be wall-mounted, but the bracket is sometimes not a part of the phone. Instead, it's an additional piece inside the box that must be hooked onto the bottom of the phone.

3. How long is the cord? Is it the right color?
Check the length and color of the coiled receiver/handset cord. Most of the coiled cords are rather short and don't stretch very far; you may want to buy a longer replacement.

Believe it or not, the colors used by varying manufacturers aren't identical. One manufacturer's "white cable may be more off-white. Colors also vary between makers of telephone coil cords. If the length of the coil cord is going to be an issue, check for a replacement cord of the exact color while you're buying the phone. Relying on memory alone to later match cord to phone could result in a color mismatch.

4. What do the keypad buttons look like?
Other ergonomic considerations are the buttons, especially the keypad. Push the buttons. Are they firm? Make sure they don't stick.

Just as important, make sure you can read the numbers. That sounds silly, but some manufacturers like to play typographical games with the keypad buttons, using odd typefaces designed to enhance the look of a phone but which actually detract from its functionality. Conversely, there are models with extra-large keypad buttons for those with eyesight problems.

5. Is the ringer adjustable?
If you can get the salesperson to plug in the phone, listen to the ringer. Some phones don't ring loudly enough for a noisy household or home office. Other might ring too loudly; some might not allow you to switch off the ringer. The most versatile phones have high/low/off ringer adjustment. In rare cases, the phone will have a sliding volume control for both ringer and voice.

If possible, compare sound quality from both ends of a conversation. Many phones that sound fine on your end can be tinny and static-laden on the other. If you can't try before you buy, patronize a dealer who has a fair return/exchange policy.

6. What basic features does the phone offer?
Corded phones are available in an amazing array of features. Before you buy, decide which features you really need. Consider features such as:
  • Speed dial: A corded phone has the same basic features as a cordless model, with one exception: speed dial. Sure, cordless phones have some (usually very limited) speed dial memory. But because speed dialing is done from the handset, you must memorize which keys are assigned to which phone number. On the other hand, you are tied to the base of a corded phone. Accordingly, you have more space to write down which phone numbers are assigned to which button.

The speed dial memory of corded phones varies depending on price and model. There are some models with as many as 30 speed dial positions. These are usually arrayed in defined "upper" and "lower" positions. Speed dial slots in the "lower" position usually require you to first push a "lower" button before hitting the appropriate speed dial button.

  • Hold: Another feature familiar to anyone who has used a multi-line phone in an office is hold. Even many single-line models have a "hold" function, which is handy when you want to pick up another extension.

  • Speakerphone: Beware — there are many types of speakerphones, each of varying quality. A speakerphone usually consists of a built-in microphone and a speaker, which allows you to converse without picking up the handset.

In most cases, a speakerphone is half-duplex, meaning that only one person can talk at a time. A full-duplex speakerphone allows both parties to talk and be heard at the same time. A phone with "on-hook dialing" could be a speakerphone without the microphone — you can listen but not talk. On-hook dialing simply means that you can dial and wait for a connection before you pick up the handset. A full speakerphone obviously allows on-hook dialing, also referred to as "hands-free" operation.

  • TouchTone: By now, everyone is probably aware of TouchTone (which is actually a registered trademark of AT&T) and its voice mail and services advantages. Note that some cheap phones aren't true TouchTone phones. That is, they don't offer so-called long tones, those that continue as long as you hold down the key. Some short-burst phones offer only one tone of short duration no matter how long you push the button, which may not be long enough to allow TouchTone access for retrieving messages from your answering machine or for performing other functions requiring TouchTone.

To be certain you've got a TouchTone phone, look at the FCC registration number on the back of the unit. If it ends in T, it is a TouchTone phone only. If it ends in E, it can be used for both TouchTone and pulse dialing.

  • Caller ID: Another quite popular feature is Caller ID, a phone-call identification system that allows you to see the number and (usually) the name of the person who is trying to call you. Caller ID is one of an advanced series of subscription call functions, such as Call Waiting, Call Forwarding and Call Blocking, which are available from your local phone company. Caller ID with Call Waiting displays the name and number of a person who is calling while you're already on a call. You can then choose to swap calls or to ignore the interruption.

  • Redial: Also called LND (last number dialed), this button automatically redials the last number you dialed. Some models continue to redial until a connection is made.

  • Mute: Also called a privacy button, the mute button allows you talk to someone in your room without being overheard by the person on the phone.

  • Flash: An electronic disconnect used to switch between calls when using Call Waiting or to get a new dial tone. The Flash button comes in handy if the keypad is built into the handset and you're away from the base unit. Just because there isn't a special Flash button doesn't mean the phone is incapable of handling Call Waiting. Simply bouncing the switch hook (the clicker underneath the receiver when you hang up the phone) works as a Flash button.

  • Readout: Displays various call information, including the phone number dialed, the elapsed call time, the time of day and, on Caller ID-equipped phones, the number (and name) of caller (usually on an LCD).

  • Toll restriction: Often an external device that prevents outgoing long-distance calls or calls to certain individuals or groups of your choosing. You can bypass the restriction by using a password.

  • Message alert: Some phones are equipped with an LED to let you know you have a voice mail message waiting. You must subscribe to your local phone company's voice mail service.
