Do You Need a Multiline Phone?

In this age of the Internet and of home offices, almost anyone who's online needs two lines. A corded phone is a necessity if you have a home office — if for no other reason than to ensure the clarity of your connection. But does this mean you need a two-line or even a three-line phone?

In some ways it's less a technical matter than a tax matter. The Feds allow you to deduct your home office phone expenses if the phone is used specifically and exclusively for business. This means that if a second line is used exclusively for business purposes, most (if not all) of the costs associated with it are tax deductible. Of course, you should check with your accountant to be sure.

If you don't have a home office and you use your second line exclusively for fax or Internet access, you may not need a two-line phone because you will presumably use only one line for voice calls.

There are three advantages to a two-line phone, corded or not:

Simultaneous usage — Being able to talk on one line while you're online or on another call on the other line (unless you have DSL or a cable modem, which obviates a second line).
Conferencing — The ability to have a three-way conversation by combining calls on both Line 1 and Line 2.
Monitoring — The red "Line 2" light will be illuminated to indicate that you're online.

Two-line phones often have three jacks: one combined jack that accepts a single two-line cord and separate input jacks for Line 1 and Line 2. Which configuration you choose depends on how you plan to connect your fax, modem and/or answering machine.
