Notebook Accessories &#151 Getting the Max Out of Your Portable Pal

You accessorize your house. Your car. Your outfits. Why? Because they look and work just the way you like them only after you've accessorized. Guess what? It's just the same for that shiny new notebook. To get the max out of your laptop lifestyle, you'll need to add some cool new notebook accessories. Here are a few examples to get you started.

Maximize Mobility
If you're truly serious about taking your notebook on the road (and you should because this is a big part of why laptops are so cool) you're going to need a notebook case. A notebook case not only helps you carry your silicon beauty, but it also acts as its main protector, a first line of defense if you will. Plus, a case is the perfect place to toss everything, from your files and memos to a mini mouse or an extra battery.

Speaking of extra batteries, picking up one ensures notebook power is always at your fingertips. Imagine being almost finished with updating your big presentation on a transcontinental flight only to have your battery conk out. No good. Dropping a fully charged extra battery into your notebook bag ensures that this sort of heartbreak will never come knocking on your door.

Maximize Productivity
There are a ton of great productivity-enhancing tools for your notebook, but the most useful may just be the mini mouse. Like its name suggests, this is a miniature, but surprisingly comfortable, version of your favorite pointing tool. Just plug it into the USB port (or similar interface) on your notebook and away you go.

Many folks struggle with the touchpads and trackballs that come as standard cramp-inducers on laptops. Maximize Security
The same things that make notebooks easy to own (mobility, mobility, mobility) make them easy targets for thieves (mobility, mobility, mobility). Be prepared — with the aid of a cable lock.

These thin, portable, often rubber-coated steel wires are equipped with locks and attach easily to your notebook through a lock slot. (Most laptops are equipped with a lock slot. Check your owner's manual to find out if yours is.) Simply loop the cable around something immovable (like your desk or an airplane seat), and your notebook isn't going anywhere without you.

And if it isn't thieves, it's electrical currents that are after your laptop. A rogue current can fry your laptop's insides faster than you can say a string of words unfit to print. Stop this AC/DC invasion by throwing a portable surge protector into your laptop bag — and using it at all times. It's worth it. Believe us.

Sometimes it isn't your notebook that needs protecting — it's the info displayed on your screen. Stop those portable-computer Peeping Toms in their tracks with a handy notebook accessory called a privacy filter. This thin sheet of plastic attaches to your notebook's display in a jif and works similarly to a louver blind, making it impossible for people without a direct view to see your screen.
