Troubleshooting Your Portable MiniDisc Player/Recorder

Lack of power corrupts absolutely
The first thing to check when your MD poops out is the battery. Try the same function with the AC adapter connected, and if it works, you'll know the battery is the culprit. If your unit uses standard alkaline batteries it is time to pop some new ones in. If your unit has a rechargeable battery, it's probably dead. If the battery's not charged, you'll get a "low batt" message or nothing at all. Simply connect the adapter and recharge. If it doesn't begin charging (usually there's a "charging" message or some other sort of indication), then the battery's not functioning or the connection is wrong. Take the battery out and check to make sure it's not in backwards. Now replace it.

If it still doesn't charge, the little metal contacts might not be hitting the battery (they can be quite flimsy). Although it may be tempting to reach in and bend the contacts into position, resist the urge. Any evidence of a botched user fix will void your warranty, resulting in a much bigger (and more expensive) headache. Bring the player into your local authorized service store/center to get it fixed. It is possible that the battery will need to be replaced.

Other common problems
The disc itself is easy to insert incorrectly, so make sure the arrow printed on the disc is headed in the right direction. Sometimes moisture from condensation will form inside the player — for example, in abrupt temperature changes or very humid environments. In this case, you should give the unit an hour to adjust before you use it; in that time, the condensation should evaporate.

The owner's manual is also a good source of MD troubleshooting info, although their solutions are often a little obvious. In the same vein, MDs have text messages like "disc full" and "low batt" that should make troubleshooting a bit easier.
