The Right Camcorder Deserves the Right Accessories

You've done the research and selected the camcorder that best suits your needs. But great video recording doesn't stop there — it only starts. For optimal use of your camcorder, consider the following accessories and let the need determine the solution.

Camcorder Carrying Case
A sturdy carrying case is a must-have for camcorder owners. Not only does it simplify storing and transporting your camcorder and accessories, it will protect your valuable investment. Look for cases with protective padding, plenty of pockets for storing accessories and durable, waterproof exterior fabric. Many camcorder starter kits include a carrying case designed specifically for your camcorder model.

Batteries and Chargers
Nothing takes the wind out of your sails like missing the perfect shot because your battery is dead. It's a good idea to buy at least one extra battery pack that lasts up to four hours, and rotate it with the battery that comes with the camcorder. Or look into purchasing a camcorder starter kit that includes a battery pack and charger. Commonly used battery types include LiIon (lithium-ion), NiCad and NiMH.

Consider charging your battery pack with a stand-alone charger to reduce the risk of damaging your camcorder during the process.

Mini-DVDs, DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs
The recent trend in camcorders is direct recording of video onto mini recordable DVDs, DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs for easy playback in your home DVD player and transfer to PC. Both video and still images are recorded onto disc. The most common recording capacity is 1.4GB for up to 30 minutes of recording time per disc. Check your instruction guide to make sure you select the right DVDs for recording.

Videotapes
Make sure you have plenty of videotapes on hand so you don't run out of room while trying to capture that once-in-a-lifetime moment. There are a multitude of videotapes to choose from, so be sure you read your instruction guide carefully and select the right videotape for your camcorder. Then buy several extras, especially before traveling, and keep them in your carrying case. Common types of videotapes include Digital8, 8mm, Hi8, VHS, VHS-C and SVHS-C.

Memory Cards and Sticks
Digital camcorders not only allow you to take videos, but digital still photos as well. A memory card stores those photos until you transfer them to your personal computer. Some digital camcorders also record video clips on a memory card. If you purchase a digital camcorder, a memory card may be included, although it varies by brand and model. If you are planning on taking a lot of still photos and/or video clips, you'll want to buy a larger-capacity memory card. Common memory card capacities are 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1.0GB and 2GB. And while you're at it, pick up a card reader for easy transfer of images from your camcorder to your PC.

Tripods and Monopods
Even though camcorders are made to be held, tripods and monopods can make a big difference in video quality. No matter how steady you think you are, you'll get some shaking with almost any shot, especially with extreme telephoto settings. Look for a lightweight tripod that folds into a small, portable unit and sports a fluid head type so you can smoothly pan your camera. A monopod (a single-leg stand) is easy to set up and also provides a stable platform for your camcorder. They're great for shooting in crowded areas.
