A generic guide to connecting your phone and Bluetooth headset

Don't want to be one of those drivers courting highway danger by driving with one hand and holding your phone with the other? Then get yourself a Bluetooth-enabled phone and Bluetooth headset. Of course, they're also very useful at the office or around the house. Once you have the proper equipment, linking together your phone and headset for hands-free operation is easy.

Steps to get your phone and Bluetooth headset talking

1. Charge your headset.
Most headsets come with enough battery charge for an initial pairing, but it is recommended to charge your Bluetooth device for at least one hour before using your headset for maximum-use time.

2. Power on the headset and place it in pairing mode.
Starting with the device off, press and hold the main power button for 3-8 seconds (or flip the "On" switch, if your device has one). Most headset brands will either glow a solid color or flash in multiple colors when they are in pairing mode and will remain in pairing mode for 30-60 seconds or until a handset is connected. If the headset exits pairing mode before you can complete the connection, you will need to turn the headset off and on and start over.

3. Find your headset on your phone.
From the menu on your phone, under Settings, select "Connections" or "Communications" and then "Bluetooth." In "Bluetooth," select "My Devices" or "Add/New Device." Make sure your Bluetooth device is still in pairing mode, then select your device from the list of Bluetooth devices on your phone.

4. Enter passcode and complete.
Most passcodes are "0000" but consult your manual if this doesn't work. Once the passcode is accepted, the screen should say "now connected" or "devices paired." The quickest way is to make a test call.

Note:
If your Bluetooth headset has been paired to another phone, it will automatically pair with that phone again once it is powered on. For best results, turn off the Bluetooth on any phones that had been previously paired with the Bluetooth device.
