Synopsis

Queen of the Jungle [Serial]
Considered by many the nadir of low-budget serial making, Screen Attractions' Queen of the Jungle consists mainly of animal footage from William N. Selig's 1922 The Jungle Goddess, fleshing out a silly story about a young man, David Worth (Reed Howes), returning to the jungle in search of his childhood playmate (Mary Kornman) who had once disappeared from a hot-air balloon. Joan, it turns out, dropped from the skies in the middle of the jungle only to become a white High Priestess to a native tribe. Reunited, the childhood friends are soon knee-deep in trouble, this particular strip of back-lot jungle apparently overrun by villainous animal trappers, nasty Arabs, a mysterious leopard woman, a masked rider, and sundry wildlife fauna, not all of which is indigenous to Darkest Africa. Leading man Howes, a former male model, had enjoyed a modicum of success in the silent era but was by 1935 relegated to obscure Poverty Row programmers. A graduate of Our Gang, Mary Kornman hardly possessed the certain something that would have made her Queen of Mu reasonably believable and her performance is quite frankly ludicrous. Most of the action scenes were lifted from the silent footage and feature the stars of The Jungle Goddess, Elinor Field and Truman Van Dyke. Queen of the Jungle was also released as a six-reel feature presentation. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi
