Love this refrigerator
Posted by: BelindaSusan from: SW Arkansas on
I really like my new Samsung refrigerator so far. Maybe it's because I replaced a very ordinary, older one. I like having the ice and water in the door. The refrigerator has so much room, especially in the doors. I like the LED lighting. So far, everything works fine. I did buy extended warranty because of previous ratings. We'll see if I use it. However, I got such a good deal that even with the extended warranty, I paid less than regular price.

Really wanted to like this
Posted by: TechSupportDad from: Near Seattle, WA on
Chose this frig after a lot of online research and several trips to various outlets- Sears, Lowes etc. BB had the, well, 'best buy' so we got it here. Loved the LED lighting (the slow turn on, the clear white light and the fact that they don't heat up the food you're trying to keep cool). Loved the sleek design with the minimalist ice/water dispenser/LED display. Very quiet (BB had one actually running on display!). And reviews were generally positive.
Got it home and immediately ran into problem one- like others here, we had trouble getting ice without splattering the floor and that was cubed ice. Crushed ice was impossible. Plus, my wife broke a glass because you have to push the paddle so hard. And there is no way to get ice from the ice maker manually.
Otherwise, we generally were happy- it is quiet, except when the ice maker is busy. The interior lighting still looks cool. Lots of useful space. And it holds temperatures well.
Except- this summer the unit began to build up ice behind the back panel, which serves as a plenum to feed air into the freezer. There was so much ice back there it started to block the vents (see picture). Eventually, the ice built up to the point that it was rubbing against the evaporator fan and could be heard clearly from across the room. And we live near Seattle, which is quite dry in the summer; very low humidity compared to many places in the US.
So we called Samsung's 800 number. Very pleasant person took the information and said someone would call to make an appointment. Waited a week. Nothing. Called back. The repair company they contacted didn't cover our area. So they had to refer it to their 'extra special' service desk. Mind you, we live less than 5 miles from Seattle. Not exactly in the sticks. Waited another week. No call. Called Samsung. The extra special desk can take up to 10 days to process an order. It's only been 7 days. Waited another 5 days. No call. Called Samsung. Again. Eventually, three and a half weeks after my original call, they sent out the A&E service. Very professional independent servicer. He really tried. Called his buddy, downloaded the service manual, took a bunch of readings, but nothing was definitive. He agreed it wasn't right, just couldn't figure out what was wrong. So finally, he called the Samsung help desk. Talked to someone there for 10 minutes and hung up. Told me Samsung's response was they couldn't be sure that ice growing behind the back of a frost free refrigerator wasn't normal since the unit hadn't been on the market long enough, and that if we didn't like the sound of the evaporator fan buzzing itself into oblivion we could always manually defrost it. I kid you not. He was pretty disgusted, but explained that unless Samsung authorized the repair, it wouldn't be covered under warranty.
So we called BB. They were apologetic and sympathetic, but said since it was past 30 days it was up to Samsung to make it right. Called Samsung again, put my foot down, and finally was transferred to someone who gave a hoot. She agreed this had been going on for far too long and agreed to replace the refrigerator. Waited another 2 weeks to get the authorization, but we finally are getting a different model as a replacement next week.
So in the end, eventually, Samsung did the right thing, but if our frig had been dead, 6 weeks to get a resolution would hardly have been acceptable. I can't tell you if what happened to us was 'normal' for this unit. I just know we did not have a good experience with it.

Watch the warranty period
Posted by: FrustratedBuyer1 from: York, PA on
This fridge comes with a one year warranty. Ours died one year, one week after purchase. Trying to get someone from Samsung for service is like sending light into a black hole, and it turns out the closest authorized service technician is 50 miles away. I've been able to troubleshoot and discovered it's the compressor that's shot already. I had thought that maybe I just received a bad one but a quick google search looks like this model is plagued with failing within one to five years after purchase. I admit that's an error on my part as I was too excited by the sale price I didn't do enough homework before buying. It WAS a nice fridge when it worked...but I'm very frustrated now that one year later I have to fight to either find parts to fix it or start all over and get a new fridge!

I have had this refrigerator for 5 months. One service call for the board that indicates ice dispensing choice went out. Geek Squad did one call to confirm problem, another service call to replace the board. Agree with other users about the mess the ice maker makes, try as I might I can't dispense ice without having to pick up cubes from the floor. And agree ice maker is pretty loud (water fill, and cubes dropping).
My biggest disappointment is that at the 5 month mark the indicator to replace the water filter went on. I replaced my old refrig to have a more energy efficient appliance. The filter for this fridge is $40. Replacing the filter every 5 months means approx $100 a year for filter maintenance. Far more than I have saved in energy!!!!

Great Fridge, stylish
Posted by: newhouseowner from: Dallas, GA on
We bought this fridge and after 2 weeks the ice maker broke. Luckily it was under 30 days and we still had the receipt, so BestBuy swapped it out for another one. We have had no problems at all with this one.
My wife and I love this fridge! It's beautiful, the inner LED lighting is great at night. The water dispenser comes out fast, which is nice. The ice dispenses in a wide radius, which sometimes misses the cup and ends up on the floor (but don't most fridges do that?). It runs quiet and the features are great. It would be nice if Samsung lit up the "ICE" & "WATER" touch buttons on the front to make it easy for guests to figure out how to get water/ice when they come over!

Purchased this item in August of 2010. very easy to accidentally turn this fridge to demo mode where it is basically turned off as a refrigerator but looks like it is working. even worse, I had to replace the fan motor after only a year and a half. When the repairman took the back panel off the entire inside was caked with ice. cheap brackets and plastic pieces all over the inside. no warranty after 12 month. Repairman says there are a lot of problems with Samsung, very expensive to fix and difficult to work with. Would not buy this brand again

This fridge is really nice looking. And, overall it does work. But, what is the point of getting a fridge with a water dispenser and ice maker if they don't work! Received the fridge and everything appeared to be in working order after delivery. The ice dispenser was making ice. Water comes out. However, the ice will not dispenser. The touch screen button would not respond. After calling Samsung, then being directed to the store I bought it from, then being directed to corporate, which then directed me back to the store I purchased it from....I did get a service call put in for the fridge. Bit of a hassle though Best Buy. Very frustrating when you just want your new appliance to work. Made it seem that my expectation that the fridge work was an inconvenience. So...I am returning this fridge (it needs a new control board or something according to the repairman) and getting the next step up. I love the look of the Samsung. All the other questionable reviews on this particular model seem to be correct. If I were you, I'd think twice about getting this one. There is a reason they are putting these on sale for less than a $1k.

Loving this fridge!
Posted by: KutieKittie from: Owego, NY on
Ok, so I read through the reviews before I bought the fridge and I was cautiously optimistic when I went out to actually look at it at the store. This particular unit was plugged in and I noticed the energy efficient LED's right away. Another person commented that higher end models have more lights and while this is true, I find I like the ambient lighting in this model. Is it as bright as a regular bulb? Probably not, but for energy efficiency it's a nice trade off and I've not had a problem finding anything in my fridge the past few weeks I've had it. Is the ice switch a bit difficult to push? Yes. I just use my finger instead of the glass, which I could see breaking if it is a thinner type glass. The ice will go shooting outside the cup if it's not placed up tight to the opening, but I noticed it only does this if you're using the crushed ice option. I've not had the problem with the "cubed ice" selection. Another reviewer commented that the water comes down at an angle. I agree it does, but has never been a problem. Overall I love the size of this fridge and all the nice features. Definitely a great value for the money.

I just love everything about this refrigerator. It is very roomy inside and the space is easy to organize. My favorite part is the cubby beside the ice maker that is perfect for storing frozen pizzas.

Not very happy with this refrigerator
Posted by: david1962 from: Austin, Texas on
I purchased this refrigerator in mid April of 2010 and had it delievered and setup. After using it for 2 weeks, we decided to return the unit because of the following reasons. 1)Front panel to use water or ice you have some blue lights but no lights highlighting the heading on the function (crushsed, cubed, no ice or water). During the day its ok to read, but at night it is hard to read the heading below the blue light indicator. 2) When dispensing ice, it tends to dispense the crushed ice in a wide area and causes some spillage 3) Ice make makes lots of noice when the unit refills with water. I returned this unit and purchased a Samsung rs275ac model. This is the model that consumers digest recommends. It is night and day from this model. I am very happy with this unit. Its a little more, but fixes all of the above issues.
