Good DVD player
Posted by: HighFog from: Santa Rosa, CA on
I wanted to get a simple DVD player (not ready for BlueRay yet) to replace an one that was starting to have troubles, and couldn't upconvert.
This was actually hard to find - everyone seems to want BlueRay now and that's nearly all that's available, and the players cost a little more. We don't own any BlueRay discs, and can't see paying more for them - the regular DVD is really great resolution - at least for our eyes!
So, this is compact, easy to setup, does HDMI to our new screen (720p), and the two devices seem to negotiate the picture size really well so it fills the screen as best it can, whatever the aspect ratio of the source, without distortion. The upconversion is lovely - very sharp and clear. Motion is smooth.
I'm a "casual" movie watcher, but my wife (whom this is for, really) is avid - usually a movie every night.

Solid product at a great price!
Posted by: TUMF from: Miami, FL on
this dvd player is perfect. plug and play with hdmi cable and you're good. the issues mentioned by others must be isolated incidents. the remote works fine and it provides more features than what comes with more expensive dvd player options. if you have a samsung tv, you can use the remote to control it. the product is stylish and takes up very little space. unless it blows up tomorrow, i think that i got a steal for the price that i paid.

Does not play mpeg-4/avi
Posted by: shass from: Charlotte on
I selected this unit because it advertises that it plays mpeg-4 files in avi format. It does not. Tech support is not very helpful. Plan to return.

OK Player, Good Price
Posted by: Blanchette from: Chicago, IL on
I just bought this cheap DVD player, to use over the next year or so - with the intention of getting a Blu-ray player. The picture quality of the movies is great. The movies also have a high definition quality because of it being connected to an HDTV with an HDMI cable. However, my main complaint is that not all of the functions on the remote control work properly. Perhaps this has to do with the programming of my cable tv and regular tv remote along with the use of this one. I cannot get the remote to go to a movie's main menu. I also noticed that the subtitle function doesn't work on it either. It's a good, cheap DVD player, but it's not the best of the best of them.

DIVX Playback Compatible!
Posted by: rhramalla from: Dearborn, MI on
This player supports DIVX format, meaning; if you back up your movies on your computer or if you purchase downloaded movies online in DIVX format, (you can also convert them to DIVX format), you can burn up to 8 or 9 standard size movies on a single DVD and play them using this player.

I received this as a birthday gift as it was on my list. Unfortunately, it is going back to Best Buy.
- DVD player is loud. It constantly chirps at you even when you are watching a movie which is distracting.
- After about 15 minutes of watching a movie the picture becomes fuzzy. We tried 2 different discs and it did it on both. When people start moving the figures become jagged along the edges.
- No memory. One feature I liked about Sony was that if I removed the disc to play something else, it would remember where I was when I reinsert the disc at a later date.
- You have to turn the player on before you can do anything else. Sounds normal? Not really. My Sony would automatically turn on if I pushed Play or Eject. Not so with this Samsung.
I chose this player because the new Sony model doesn't have a display screen on the front which is something we like.
- I had an older Sony DVD player that needed replacing. This was for our bedroom, so I didn't need anything other than standard DVD with upscaling. Best Buy salesman kept pushing a Blue Ray on my girlfriend. She said he rolled his eyes when she said this was all we needed. Terrible service.

Brilliant dvd player
Posted by: Druidwulf from: Salem, Oregon on
As an expat Brit, I can't help but reccomend this dvd player enough, as I have a large collection of region 2 dvd's from England, even though it doesn't state on the box that this player is region free (meaning it can play dvd's from anywhere in the world), if you go to the following website, you'll find a way to make this samsung player Region Free :~
If you're like me and have a lot of dvds from different parts of the world, do yourself a favor and get this dvd player NOW!!!.

I bought this to replace my broken 11 year old Sony, and it made it about 11 minutes before I decided that I didn't want it . This thing is total junk. It's very small and light which isn't bad except that the door is so powerful when it opens it almost launches the player off the shelf. To make matters worse, when the disc is in the player it makes an obnoxiously loud whirring sound and a constant chipping as it's playing. More still, it has a lot of useless functions, I wanted a DVD player, not a PC. I want to be able to put a disc in the player and watch it, not have to go through tons of extra steps to select that I put a disc in the player, that it is a DVD, and that I want it to go to the DVD menu.

will not work
Posted by: xet007 from: Houston,Tx on
After I put a DVD in, it says there is NO disc. I've tried a couple. Then Best Buy (?) says after 15 day's, they will not do anything. They use the date that UPS handed it to USPS. So beware of bestbuy.
