Back in March 2014, when it first came out, I bought this camera elsewhere because BestBuy.com wasn't selling it yet. The early reviews said that this was THE camera to buy because of its high def night time vision.
So we bought one and I can truly say this camera truly has excellent quality day and night vision. It also has adjustable motion detection sensitivity. Plus, you can define up to 3 separate motion detection areas. Great for keeping ceiling fans above the detection zones and wandering pets below the detection zones.
We have viewed both live video and playback of stored events using a PC, iPad, iPhone, and Android phone from in our home and from across the country. Access to the camera is controlled at two different levels by two different passwords. All camera settings and features can be controlled from any of the above mentioned devices.
Camera can also be triggered by audio events like your dog barking, footsteps, and glass breaking.
Setting up the camera on your wifi network is as easy as selecting a displayed network SSID name and then entering the security passphrase. No harder than selecting a wifi network on your smartphone.
Camera has no internal memory and can only stream live video unless you install a memory card (max 64gb) to save the events locally. Triggered events can also be uploaded to your Google Picasa account if offsite storage is desired. Which is a good idea for a security camera because a burglar can always just steal the camera with its memory card. Triggered event alarms can also be sent to your email.
We installed a 64gb microSDXC memory card locally in the camera and it can take several months to fill up depending on the amount of activity in the detection zones. If desired, the camera can be set to overwrite the older events once the card is full.
The memory card can be pulled from the camera and inserted into a computer where the events that were recorded as non-proprietary AVI video files can be stored on the computer and viewed with most media players. On the card, each date an event occurred is a separate directory and the event videos for each date are sequentially numbered AVI files. I recommend using Microsoft's free download RichCopy 4.0 to handle file transfers of this magnitude. Nothing else handles a 64gb transfer of tens of thousands of files as gracefully.
We originally bought this camera as a high-end baby monitor for the times our granddaughter visits. It is definitely that and then some. The high def night time image quality quite literally puts other baby monitors to shame. Plus, the Internet capability lets our daughter and son-in-law look in on their daughter from 900 miles away. With the onboard microphone and speaker they were able to participate in playtime, bedtime stories, night prayers, and so on. Microphone sensitivity and speaker volume are controlled remotely.
Overall, we are very pleased with this camera and are buying a second one.

Great Product-Connection problems fixable

I did a lot of looking around before deciding on this particular model for a security camera. I read reviews everywhere and decided to give it a shot.
As others have mentioned use the app to help set up the camera the first time especially if you're trying to do it with wireless. There are no good instructions in the box. You can go onto the Samsung site and see the entire user manual, but frankly it's not that great.
So using the app I was able to set the camera up. I ran into a couple of problems that any new buyer should know about. It wouldn't connect initially and I found I had to unplug my Roku from my tv set because it was picking it up as another network and 'confusing' the camera. Once I did that I was able to set it up with a wireless connection...however it didn't hold it's connection.
I want the camera on our first floor but our router is on the 2nd floor. Apparently my wifi wasn't strong enough so I moved the camera upstairs and sat it on the router and it held a connection for a much longer time, but still lost it after a few hours.
I reset the camera #button in the back# and physically attached it via the included Ethernet cable to the router. This worked perfectly, we never lost the signal and were able to access the camera from our smartphones. I should mention that I used the PC to do this setup, just go into the Samsung site and establish an account. It's easier to do other setup changes to the camera from there as well.
So now the problem was...the camera was working but it was upstairs and that's not where we wanted it. So I bought a powerline adapter, I used the TP-Link AV500 starter kit, but there are others. It cost about $36. This device uses the electrical wiring in your home to enhance your internet connection.
It comes with two adapters, you plug one of the devices into the router and plug it in. You take the other to the location you want in your house, plug it in to a normal house plug and then use the camera's Ethernet cord to hook it to the camera.
When I plugged it in it reconnected to our router on its own and is working great now. Even after all the initial setup issues we think this camera is great, nice picture, notifications working fine and we're glad we bought it.

I work out if town a lot and this camera is fabulous !! I have bought three total and plan to buy more. It's better and way cheaper than any of the security plans you pay for monthly.

For the price you pay you get an excellent camera, but a mediocre service from Samsung. The only way to access the camera is by signing on with a new account at www.samsungsmartcam.com. You can access the camera interface if you find the assigned DHCP IP address on your router, but this interface is minimal and don't let you do much. Here is a description of the different experience I have:
On a Windows Desktop.
The SmartCam web site uses a browser plugin. This plugin as of today only works on Internet Explorer or Firefox. It no longer works on Google Chrome as of September 1, 2015.
On a Mac
Pluging works with Safari.
On My iPad
The app keep asking you for the password even if you checked to remember the camera password.
The apps also keep asking for password. But the 8/21/2015 update made it worst as now the Android App eats up all my battery all the time.
Notification on Android works sometimes.
Notification on iPad comes in late.
In neither, Desktop, Mac, Android or iOS you can watch the video on the Events page. You always need to go to the Playback tab to watch the videos.
On Android phone it always connect in Relay Mode even if you have high speed LTE.
If you are planning on buying this camera, the most useful way to access it is through a computer desktop. iOS and Android apps leave a lot to be desired.

I originally started with the DLink full HD camera at the same price and couldn't get it to work, even with a DLink router. Gave the Samsung Smart HD camera a shot and connected within 5 minutes. A few things I have learned about using the Samsung camera which other reviewers missed and complained about.
- To get the full setup options logon using the website SamsungSmartCam.com from there you can set a schedule day/time to receive notifications.
- Yes you can turn off the Green LED light if you do not want the camera to stick out.
- Link your Goggle email address and set up Picasa to receive notifications with a picture attached of what set off the motion alert.
- Go to Samsingsv.com to download the full pdf. manual (39 pages) select your camera/Resource Downlaod/User Manual.
- Account set up logon is separate from the camera password. A separate password can be assigned to camera. Activate Auto logon/Remember ID for account and assign a simple password for camera if needed.
- Memory card, if the camera is not recognizing the card, format the micro memory card in a computer and format SAT.
Important note: if you do not customize a notification schedule you will get bombarded with notifications.
- Motion Sensitivity detection can also be customized.
No I do not work for Samsung, but after the time (2 days and 3 hours on the phone with DLink) I am thrilled to have this work.
Finally, I do get brief disconnect notifications but logs right back in immediately. Hey... it's a do it yourself home monitoring camera not a professional wired security system. For the price I feel I have a good product that gets the job done.

I got this for our upcoming baby so that we could keep tabs even if we were away from the home. This is a great camera. It has excellent video quality both day and night. It is packed full of features and the the app for the iPhone is great. I highly recommend this model.
-Motion Detection is great, and you can customize an area on the screen to detect motion, so no cars driving by alerting you.
-Free app is packed full of features. Music, Pre-record audio bits, 2 way communication
-Alerts upload photos of the event to google drive
-Audio alerts are a bit sensitive
-Motion alerts can be triggered by time change (shadows or loss of light)
-Awkward size, it is kind of top heavy and wants to topple on occasion if not mounted down.

Surprised how easy it was to get setup. Motion detection is very sensitive day or night. Was easily trigged by our dog walking by. I also like that you can take the SD card out of the camera and play back the recordings as .avi files on your computer.
Notifications to my gmail account did not work at first. I kept logging in and out and re-saving the password, but that did not help. Got an email from gmail saying something about sign-in not permitted because the Samsung app was using a less secure method. Went into the settings for my gmail account and found where you can allow access for a less secure app and instantly stated getting alerts in my inbox. Hope this helps anyone having a similar issue.

I have two of these, one on the front of the house and one in back. Have no problems setting these up, used sd cards on both cameras for recording. Alerts with pictures are sent to gmail and picasa(no smartphone) when motion is detected. Continues recording will cover almost 7 days.

Camera would continually disconnect. Couldn't count on it to work, and we needed it to watch our 7-month old. WORST tech support ever. Tried three times to get some support, always told we would get a call back, never did. Last time waited two days. Stay away from this camera. Try DLink. 24/7 support, nice camera, short wait for a tech.

Good camera, but not pet friendly

I purchased this camera 2 weeks ago prior to a vacation. I did about 4 days of testing and adjusting sensitively of motion and sound detection. Once I thought I had the setting where I needed them, I left on vacation. There were a lot of pros and cons...but mainly cons because of the two live-in critters in my home. (Odie and Sheldon - Dog and Cat). Let's get started...
-PRO: Motion and sound detection is on and zones set. 1st Alert goes off when Doggy Day Care comes to pick up pup for the day. Works great.
-CON: Two zones are set for motion detection well above areas where animals cannot trigger detection. Everytime cat walks into room...push notification is sent to phone. Probably 15 times that day.
-PRO: Detection triggered when dog returns home w/ Doggy Day Care.
-CON: Had to turn off push notifications once dog returned home because he was setting them off every 5 minutes (or less).
-PRO: Was able to see video recordings easily from phone. Crisp and clear.
Day 2 - 7:
-CON/PRO: Lost connectivity with camera for about an hour on day 2. Not sure why, but connection recovered.
-CON: Had to change push notification when dog left for the day. Motion and sound detection was just to sensitive for animals and zone settings just didn't seem to work correctly.
-PRO: Video recordings for the entire week (in non-HD) mode barely put a dent into my 64gb memory card.
-Ability to use multiple cameras on one app.
-Two way ability to talk via phone to camera worked great.
-No battery backup
-Not compatible with other systems (Home automation types).
-Not very inconspicuous.
-App was a bit confusing at 1st.
-Had to create a Google+ account to be able to view photos over the net while away from home.
-Night vision is so so.
Overall, if I didn't have pets, I would have rated this camera a 4 star. A 5 star rating would only have happened if camera was IFTTT compatible and able to work with other home automation hubs like SmartThings, Insteon, Nest, etc. Pricing was average for ability. They really need to work on software and recognition in order for this device to be for successful.
