    Synopsis

One of the most surreal and outlandish cartoons ever to hit the airwaves, the first season of Cartoon Network's Sealab 2021 arrives on DVD courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Video. Presented in 1.33:1 full-frame as originally aired, the image sports well-balanced, solid colors and little evidence of digital artifacting or edge enhancement. Audio is offered in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 2.0 and rings through without any notable distortion or hiss. As for bonus features, fans will certainly be happy to note the inclusion of the original "pitch pilot" that the creators sent to Cartoon Network, and though creators Adam Reed and Matt Thompson don't sound too proud of it, the pilot still offers a few chuckles and the same irreverent tone of the final product. Alternative endings for the episode "I, Robot" are actually more entertaining than the ending that actually aired, and it's amusing to see deleted scenes for "Little Orphan Angry" that were deemed "too evil" for air. Though it's interesting to hear the unbleeped ending of "Radio Free Sealab," the creators are indeed correct in stating that the censored version actually works better -- seeming much more obscene with a few well-placed bleeps. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
