Great price for a starter kit

When this first came out I was a bit skeptical. I'm very picky about the sodas I like. I picked this one due to lack of counter space. It doesn't take up much room and since 1 bottle of the mix is about 50 servings, its much easier to carry instead of lugging round 24pk cans, 1,2 or 3 liters and such. If your still not sure about this...come on over and I fix ya one!
Even my sister is a convert....and that ain't no easy task.

It's not all that
Posted by: GonzoF1 from: North Carolina on
We bought this to use on our boat to prevent too many cans and bottles onboard. It's ok and does as advertised. However, it takes more CO2 to make the drinks comparable to the real thing, but the CO2 cylinder on gave us 30 liters and not the 60 advertised. The diet cola is ok, but it doesn't REALLY taste like Coke, Pepsi, or even the store brands. The Dr. Pepper is good and a couple others, but if you want to replace the name brands, you won't.
STILL, it does prevent the waste of cans and could save us some space on long trips. When you do the math, it's again, not the huge savings they say it will be. With $15 to refill the CO2, $15 for 3 syrup canisters, that amount netted us exactly 30 liters, or 15 2-liter bottles. We buy the store brand at $0.79-$0.99 per. So for us, it's TWICE as much for Sodastream. (I didn't do the math for cans)
Is it worth it? Maybe, but not for the big saving over giant soda companies. It will, however, save us some space. What is THAT worth to us? I'm not sure yet. We'll see in a year.

As good as store soda but no Fructose Syrup
Posted by: Mfaure from: Broomfield, CO on
So since most reviews and instructions are way off let me explain how to use this product right to make sodas. Important: when not using unscrew the CO2 canister to ensure it doesn't leak.
When you take the 1 Liter bottles be sure to fill with filtered and COLD water. Keep one or two bottles chilling in the fridge so they are very cold and so is the bottle. This helps for carbonation. Now if you want it to be carbonated like soda push the button at the top 4-6 times until it makes a passing gas sound. Do two or three more pushes with the gas sound and then let it sit for 1 minute before detaching. This will give you a properly carbonated soda water.
Now you need to add the soda flavoring. I DO NOT recommend using the Soda Stream syrups. They use odd chemicals with terrible aftertaste and the soda's taste strange. Instead use other soda makers, you can even sometimes get actual soda syrup from wholesale retailers. I prefer Pittsburgh Soda Pop.
Their Steel City Cola tastes VERY close to coke and their Grape is fantastic. They have lots of other soda flavors as well and they don't use fructose syrup.
Overall I would not say soda stream saves money, but it does deliver very good carbonation and great soda if the right syrup is used. Much more organic and since its a liter at a time and the lids work well you won't ever have to deal with flat soda. Haven't bought a store soda since.

better than store bought flavoured soda water
Posted by: cicolasnage from: honey brook, pa on
At first I was not pressing the carbonation button down fully. The first 3 bottles of soda we made were flat. The next day While making a bottle of soda i held the carbonation button down for 3 long times until i heard the buzz sound. i released the bottle and added the flavour pack and to my surprise it actually worked great after that. Perfect soda. I only hope the carbonation cartridges and flavour packs will be available for quite a long time.

Saved me money in the first week

I really like this thing - It's simple to use and very, VERY cost effective. Keep in mind that it won't make something that tastes like a name-brand soda. To do that requires a boatload of chemicals that the Sodastream lacks. Before you get swayed by other reviews, look at the sample pack and compare the nutrition info on the back to ANY other soda. 16g of carbs for a half-liter of non-diet soda? That's right. In the end, it may taste different (IMHO, it's just as good, if not better than any store brand) but between the savings and the lack of preservatives and such, it's a heck of a good deal.

Not a bad soda maker
Posted by: Ceez103 from: Bronx, NY on
After mulling over it for some time I finally decided to purchase the SodaStream starter kit over a month ago, and so far I've enjoyed this product. It's quite simple to set up and use, and it doesn't take up significant space in the kitchen. It comes with a 1L bottle, a CO2 tank, and 6 sample flavors, my favorites being orange, root beer, and energy drink. A second bottle would've been convenient in order to have another flavor available in the fridge. My only gripe is that it may not seem like a money saver initially but it will be in the long run.

Great for fizzy drinkers

Bought this for girlfriend who is obsessed with fizzy drinks. We have cut our carbonated beverage purchases by 80% and can last 1-2 months with a single bottle of carbonater.

Great alternative to store-bought soda!
Posted by: Pengo from: San Francisco, CA on
Great option for people looking to replace store bought drinks and overly sweetened sugar content. Now we have an easy to learn system that gives us more control over the ingredients that go into our carbonated drinks at home! I don't know if this SodaStream will completely replace canned drinks at home yet, so I cannot say that it will save us money long term. What I do know is that we can enjoy fizzy water without all the unnecessary corn syrups and chemicals now! Included bottle does a fantastic job and retaining carbonation over numerous days, unlike 2 liter bottles from the store. Definitely a worthwhile buy!

A simply great machine

My family loves our SodaStream. Simple to set up and use. I like that the flavors are similar to Coke flavors. They're not exact copies of any brand but in my opinion they're closer to Coke than any other. I also like the Natural flavors (Coke, Root Beer & Ginger Ale). They remind me of what soda tasted like when I was a kid AND the Coke/Root Beer are excellent over ice cream. The only flavor that could use some work is the "Sprite" mix, not the greatest. Orange, Dr. Pete, Coke Free are all excellent. I really like that I can customize my own flavors....Coke with Grenadine or Lime is excellent. I figure it costs around .75 cents per liter and in my book a quarter saved in this economy is good. Well worth the high initial investment and will provide many happy returns.
ENJOY OVER ICE CREAM, YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED
