I am very pleased with the sound bar. I bought it open box through BestBuy online. The unit was spotless. no fingerprints no dings nothing. It was virtually brand new. At first i was a bit disappointed as it was not as immersive as i felt it was in the store. However, after listening to it for the past 5 days I am stating to really appreciate the sound. It is a very capable sound bar with lots of options including casting, wifi and Bluetooth. The only issue I have so far is that when paired it to my Vizio M55-D0 it never defaults to the input that I need to watch cable when i turn on the soundbar. If Sony were to update the software to allow me to choose what input I want it to pull from on startup I would make this 5-stars. But because of that I always need the Sony soundbar remote near by.
The bass is adequate for me. I live in an apartment and cant have booming bass. but when its needed you do feel it. I still need to adjust the placement of the sub. Maybe that will help the surround sound..sound like "surround sound".

I was in the market for a mid-range soundbar. I tried different ones but this one did it for us in our apartment.
I am using the HDMI cable that came with the sound bar and an optical cable I had laying around.
I updated the software easily on both the sound bar and on my older Sony TV to improve the chances on compatibility. I have had no issues and I'm really happy with the purchase.
In case this is helpful for others:
Both the HDMI and the optical cable are hooked from the TV to the Sound Bar. This allows me to play basically anything I need, movies/music from the ChromeCast, TV and movies from the cable box, music from my phone via Bluetooth and even from the built in casting feature the sound bar has. However, be aware the casting doesn't mean it comes with a built-in ChromeCast, the feature allows you to only stream sound but No videos, if you are looking for that functionality you need to hook up an actual ChromeCast or similar device.
The only Con I have so far is the subwoofer didn't work when streaming music via Bluetooth from a Mac.

Great sound -- when works / Caution when buying

Do not purchase if Comcast / X1 customer...
The sound bar is great. It sounds great. However, I was unable to get it to work with the most basic setup. Comcast X1, Sony 65" XBR850D, and this sound bar. Connected HDMI to TV. HDMI on ARC between sound bar and TV. Volume was very low output... when turned up all the way, it was just slightly above low to average listening levels. Started researching this problem on the internet. Turns out it is prolific. Hooked up music to the sound bar via bluetooth and a phone... boom. Sound filled the room and bass started rocking... ok, sound bar is not broken, that's what we heard in the showroom. Called Sony support, they remoted into the TV via network, and verified settings on everything. Conclusion was that it was the source components fault. OK, i'm good with that, i understand that's a potential problem. So, hooked up a DVD player via HDMI to the sound bar, same problem, just very low volume and no real 'fill' to the sound.
After reading about the source component issues and testing the 'stereo' vs 'surround' output on the X1 device, with no change...came to a decision that the 2.1 soundbar was unable to process the signal properly over the HDMI cable. I think the key here is the 2 channels vs 3 channels. Somehow, somewhere, the compressing and or decoding of the signal is failing...
Returned the product, bought a Samsung of lesser price, but had the 3.1 channel configuration i was seeking to test against.... plugged it in, and wham, it played right out of the box, nice full sound, filling the room with volume and bass. It's admittedly not as crisp or precise as the Sony set was, but, it was also $80 less on the sale prices right now. Until Sony can address this issue with a major cable supplier's equipment, I would advise people to avoid this Brand's products in the 2 channel format. I am unwilling to purchase the next level up at $750 to get into a 3 channel + configuration (i know the $600 sound bar they have is doing the same thing, but, its 2 channels still- lots of online complaints)...
All that being said, sony was unable to fix my problem, and when i plugged in the samsung, the problem went away immediately, so, i have an issue blaming the 'source component' in this scenario. Buy this specific product with caution, and be prepared to return it quickly upon the simple test that I provided ... low volume sound on tv mode, connect via bluetooth, sound is very loud and nice....

After buying our new Sony 55 inch 4K HTD TV and using our old surround sound system we decided that we needed better quality sound. Having 30 foot ceiling in our family room this small sound bar provides high quality sound

Works very well with Sony XBR-55X850D

I had the Sony HT-CT390 soundbar before which I needed to return due to a white noise problem, but am I glad I upgraded to the Sony HT-CT790. What a difference! This soundbar makes watching my XBR-55X850D even more exciting. Though you can only make adjustments to the subwoofer level (and maxed that one out with level 12) the overall sound is really nice. I also extremely appreciate Sony they added an DLNA media player which even can playback HiRes (up to 192 kHz / 24-bit) music files, wow! Am considering adding 2 surround speakers ... but the 2.1 soundbar emulates 5.1 sound quite nicely already. Highly recommended, yes!

great bar, great price

I picked up this soundbar to replace the factory speakers in my Toshiba 40 inch LED flat screen TV. I was impressed by all of the features including full support for 4K, 3 HDMI inputs, ethernet port for full home network support, and the ability to upgrade with additional Sony wireless speakers. I looked a few other models, but the team at my local Best Buy helped me make the right choice.

Easy Setup with the Startup Guide
Great sound lows & highs
Good Bass from the sub
This system lays back we were able to set ours straight up. Can be wall mounted
4 HDMI In / 1 HDMI out + TV In optical & more
If your tv has a hdmi input labeled ARC you just need a hdmi cable to hook it to the tv.
If tv has no hdmi ARC input you will have to have a optical cable with the hdmi cable.
If your tv has no hdmi ARC input or TV in optical your out of luck
We paired this with the (XBR65X900C waiting 30 days to review)
After we got it setup we moved the sub around the room to find the best sound using the same scene every time ; it will stay linked up when you plug it in again. Our Subwoofer is placed 15ft away from the tv & soundbar and stays in sync. Blu-ray,DTV box etc. plugs into the soundbar. Luv It

Theater Quality Sound
Posted by: Brian from: on
I bought this soundbar and wireless subwoofer with my Sony XBR 850D. At the time of purchase they had a bundle deal that made this soundbar priced at $299.99. This was definitely worth it. The sound is exceptional with nice lows with the subwoofer and high notes with the added tweeters on the soundbar. This soundbar and wireless subwoofer definitely elevates the sound quality compared to just my TV's stock 10W speakers. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is in the market for better sound quality in this price range.

Pairs nicely with Sony TV's
Posted by: RobertinDenver from: Colorado on
the setup was extremely easy, I had sound just minutes after taking it out of the box.
A hidden feature that I really like is that the soundbar is not only a Bluetooth receiver it is also a Bluetooth transmitter. When I don't want to fill the house with sound I can easily transmit it to a set of Bluetooth headphones.
