Mediocre product-description misleading
Posted by: Walker from: on
I've shopped around for a boombox for quite awhile. I've had several over the years and lately they've been hard to find. I purchased this for my office and was looking for some specific features.
Compared to similar products I've owned in the past, this one is mediocre. It's better than some others on the market currently but is definitely lower quality than those I bought 5 or 10 years ago. The sound quality is acceptable--not great but tolerable. It has some features I wanted but was disappointed to learn that the product description is not accurate. One feature I liked was the 30 radio presets. Sony says it has 30 but their instructions say it has 3 and their customer service confirmed this. I could overlook it if it had 10 or 15 but 3 is not enough to save the stations I listen to most often.
Overall, the product feels flimsy and not nearly as sturdy as past models. Given this, I'd recommend saving some money and getting a cheaper product as this one did not deliver. If you want a high quality sound, go with something more expensive as most audiophiles will be disappointed with this.

Solution for my MP3 needs
Posted by: OldSachseComputerGuy from: on
I needed a way to play MP3s for my mother while she is in the skilled nursing facility after a severe stroke. The playback had to be randomized and needed to run completely un-attended. The only workable solution that I had been able to find was to get a laptop and go through all of that hassle. We did not have any iPods or anything similar to hook up to a speaker docking station. Also, it had to have real speakers since ear buds or headphones would be completely out of the question. After describing my needs to the Associate at my local BestBuy, he found this Sony unit to try out. It is almost the perfect solution to my needs and it works great. The sound quality is very good and Mom is very pleased. I do wish that it had more control over the bass and treble, but it is really pretty good as it is. The radio portion is an added bonus, but not needed for this particular application. Highly recommended.

Great Price and has all the features!

I purchased this after reading several reviews online. Getting your phone to pair with it is so easy on Android just tap the NFC icon on your phone then just literally tap the phone onto the top left corner of the boombox-it's that easy! The radio reception is really good but I did have to read over the instructions to fix the stations in memory. For some reason after having it "auto" scan for stations to store in memory, some of them would be one off for example the radio would store 95.5FM when the stations actual frequency is 95.7FM. I had to go thru and re-store the stations on the correct frequency. Not a huge deal. Another good feature is you don't always have to use the power button, if you push one of the function buttons the unit will power on and go to that function (CD, Bluetooth, etc) The speakers are really powerful for their size and the bass is deep using Sony's " mega bass" button. There is no other way to adjust the audio settings such as treble all you get is mega bass on or off but it sounds good on. I have listened to several differnet types of music as well as a podcast and all sound good. Perfect size and sound for my apartment as I have no place for a shelf system and even then I cant use it to its potential because the neighbors would complain so this boombox is perfect for people in apartments!
My one grip is the LCD display on the front of the unit. It is NOT back lit and when the unit is powered off, it says "STANDBY" Come on, Sony! You could have at least included the TIME to display on it when the unit is powered off or just have the display blank. The "STANDBY" on the display is kind of annoying.

works as advertised

The first thing I did with this boom box was to verify that all the features worked. I made a new thumb drive on my home computer transferring cd's to the thumb drive. You can do this on the boom box, but I never tried this because the computer can do it fast. The thumb drive holds a lifetime of music. The thumb drive worked great. The blue tooth worked great. The digital tuning radio worked. great. The cd player works good. I am very pleased with the sound. Its a personal boom box, small. You might not entertain a party with it. Very satisfied.

Nice Sound, lots of features, decent price
Posted by: UVAJD2B from: Woodbridge, VA on
Perfect size for a dresser, desk, small office/bedroom (in addition to it being portable). Sound was better than expected. It reproduces a good range of frequencies with only drivers, and it doesn't sound flat. Some folks mentioned the cord coming out easy. You have to snug it in the first time, then it holds firm, no problems. Bluetooth connected within 10 seconds without issue or static like a cheaper model I tried first. Volume is plenty load enough for any room in the house or office.
Low down: In my opinion, boomboxes are dinosaurs. Everyone wants small, lightweight wireless headphones and spear cubes. These are hard to find nowadays, and even harder to find with this many features for $99. Bluetooth, telescoping antenna, FM & AM radio, USB for charging and ripping CDs to thumb drives, simple stylish design. My 10 year daughter is going to love this!

Awful Sounding "Boom" Box
Posted by: Markintex from: on
I can't believe this has so many positive reviews. This thing sounds worse than an old Sony clock radio that I bought in the 80's. The "Mega Bass" function is a joke that provides little bass boost. I thought that since the latest Sony Bluetooth speakers sound so good, this would too. Boy was I wrong. I guess it's possible that I just got a bad one, but I wouldn't assume that either I had to return this. Definitely not worth the money.

Fantastic boombox with incredible options
Posted by: DJRJ from: Germantown, WI on
I was searching for a new boombox for my parents since their old one quit working. They know I am much more tech knowledgeable than them so I would get them something of decent quality. I came across this item online and was slightly deterred by the price but saw lesser prices items didn't have as good of quality reviews. The more I read about this the more great options I saw it provided that I felt would be of great benefit to my parents. Getting to the point, this boombox has 2-3 wonderful features. 1. A USB port for inserting a flashdrive with countless hours of music on so they don't have to keep changing discs all the time. 2. A recording option that allows them to rip cd's to the flashdrive. They have been adding their favorite cd's to the stick so they don't have to constantly change out cd's. This has been very valuable to them. 3. This device has 'bluetooth' so it also allows you to sync up a compatible device to stream music through the air. We haven't used that feature yet because not being tech heavy they really don't have any Bluetooth devices to use but I feel its a nice option to have added for future use.
My mother is really bad with anything tech but it has been pretty simple to get her to use the device. Recording is pretty user friendly to do, only have to push 3 buttons to rip a cd. The ONLY thing I would improve upon is the EQ. There is no eq for this boombox. You have a button for 'added bass' which is very little at that. I am huge into sound and was disappointed that I couldn't alter the eq sound in any manner, not even eq presets. I feel you must have that on any audio device, even lil mp3 players offer that. EQ options and I would have given this 5 stars. But aside from that issue this boombox has been fantastic, my parents love it, my dad tells me everyday how appreciative he is that I got them this item. Price? In their case it was money well spent.

Good Value Overall
Posted by: Lynn from: on
I substracted 1 star because it does not have an external speaker connection. However, overall, it is a very smart machine. It was able to convert all my CDs (100 of them) at high speed into MP3 format and save my songs on a flashdrive. I was going to buy a software to convert my music to MP3 that would cost me $79.
It can play music from a flash drive or connect with my iPhone to play my iTunes or allows me to use as an external speaker for a phone coversation. It can randomly play my music as well as playing them in the order that I chose. By the way, it is very light weight and compact to carry around.Overall, it is good value for the money!

Boombox is good.

If you have a little more spending money, I would recommend spending about $50 or more on a different boombox, that said, this one will do the trick if you only need a little bit of audio in a room or for someone who will listen to albums on a low/medium volume.
