Absolutely the best telephoto zoom available

Compared to the excellent FE 28-70mm kit lens on the a7 & a7II, the FE 24-240 is absolutely magnificent and a solid performer. It is not rated as a macro, but at macro range through maximum zoom, the pictures are clear and exquisite. Being an amateur, the FE 24-240mm results have others thinking I may be a professional. The a7II and this lens is an outstanding combination.

Love this lens

I bought this to use as an all-purpose lens for my Sony a7. I am totally pleased with my purchase. The lens delivers great quality images and is fully integrated with all the great electronic bells & whistles associated with the Sony menu options. I am a hobbyist, not a pro, but to my eye the images I've taken are sharp, clean, and the color rendition is spot-on. I was afraid the larger aperture range would be too limiting, but given the extraordinary capability of the a7 to get great shots at high (2400 - 3600) ISO levels I have been pleasantly surprised by the ability to get usable shots indoors without a flash. About the only test I have not put this lens through yet is with flash photography, but I have been blown away with how this lens has performed to date. The only real knock on the lens I had read in reviews was related to its weight, but I felt like my body/lens combo felt reasonably well balanced in my hand, and the weight seemed less than my old a350 body with a zoom lens attached to that. I think I will buy one more FE lens, the 55 mm, F1.8, and between that and this super-zoom, I will be pretty well covered for all my needs. This lens far exceeded my expectations.

Great all around lens!

I recently purchased this lens for my A7 which I've owned since it's release. I'm an amateur photographer and I like to travel when I can. Many airlines are starting to put weight restrictions on carry-ons so that's why I bought this lens. My last trip, I brought my A7, A6000, alpha 55-200mm w/ e-mount adapter, alpha 16-50mm, kit FE 24-70, NEX 16mm pancake with fish-eye converter, alpha 50mm. Next trip, I'm downsizing! I've taken some photos and I have to say they're pretty nice. Only downside is the auto-focus, but that was to be expected. I would highly recommend this lens to those that don't want to be bogged down with numerous lenses.

Great overall lens

Great for everyday shooting, especially its zoom range is very useful; from 24mm wide angle to 240mm tele. Image quality is also very respectable for all-in-one lens. Only downside is its size and weight.

Better than my 70-200 F4
Posted by: Primitivelamps from: on
I am not a professional but have just bought the 24-240 (did not care for the quality of the ziess 24-70 I had so was looking for kinda replacement) and have been shooting on the a7ii for a couple days. I already had bought the 70-200 F4. Honestly after doing many comparison shots at equal stops and distances I think my 24-240 is sharper over the same range than my 70-200. Because of that I have decided to return the 70-200 since I’m still with in my 45 day window. Not sure if I got a really good copy of the 24-240 or a bad copy of the 70-200 but between the sharpness, extra range, and almost macro ability of the 24-240 it is a no brainier for my needs. And 500 bucks cheaper as well.

It is a super zoom, so theoretically you can carry this as your only lens on your trip.
HOWEVER, be aware it is a very heavy lens for a mirrorless system. And at 240mm side, the f/6.3 aperture means that it is not a fast lens.

Great match with A7II
Posted by: BobS from: on
Just returned from 3-week European vacation using this camera/lens combo most of the time and was very pleased with results. I've come to realize that with mirrorless cameras, the exposed sensor is subject to dirt and dust every time a lens is removed and every tiny speck on the sensor will show up on the image. Having a lens that stays on for most shots keeps the compartment much cleaner.

It's a really nice lens.

I bought the lens knowing it was heavy. But not too heavy. It's big and bulky for the Sony a7. I bought it for a varied focal length for when I have my little girl in tow. And it's suitable. The AF I find slow. Sometimes too slow. I have gotten some really sharp images with it. So it does what it needs too.

Great lens. I need a wide angle for this lens.

As I said: this is a great lens. What I need now is a wide angle to fit the lens. Where can I find it?

Solid construction. My be just wishful thinking, but the pictures do seem to be sharper than those taken with the bundled Sony zoom. No play when the lens is attached to the camera. Bought an open box item to save a little more; happy with the purchase.
